Title: Dangerous Passing
Post by: SED on August 14, 2015, 01:29:24 PM
Has anyone else seen more dangerous passing lately?

A car pulls out with too little room to pass, but rather than hit the brakes and tuck back in, the passing driver stays in the lane and forces the on-coming car to stop.  It happened to Jill and I and then I saw it again the next day.

First time was a car passing an RV - the driver tried to finish the pass into a corner and over a bridge (double yellow) and forced us off the road.  I came to a stop on the shoulder next to the bridge approach guardrail!  This was in rural eastern WA and we were the only 3 cars on the road for miles.  I wanted to  :violent1:

The very next day I was in a string of cars crossing the North Cascades Hwy and two cars jumped out to pass with very little space between them and an oncoming car.  The meet point was on the causeway & bridge that crosses Gorge Reservoir so there is no shoulder to escape too.  It quickly became obvious that the passers didn't have room to get to the front of the pack, but both drivers stayed out in the oncoming lane forcing the oncoming driver to stop on the bridge!

Three drivers forcing a pass in 2 days.  And 3 weeks ago I following a semi driver driving 15 mph over come up behind a camper van and force a pass pushing the van into the guardrail. You'd think the driver's CDL was worth more to him.

Is this just coincidence, is it how people drive now, or am I just getting old?

It happens to me regularly when I'm riding my bicycle.  Just a few days ago an oncoming driver slowed to nearly a stop because a jackass behind me passed at a blind curve.  At least this time the passing driver didn't just come back in my lane.

Frequently, unfortunately yes.  On V7R today on Houston I10 west: had a car drift left into my lane....admit I was passing thru blind spot.
Fortunately the cager did not jerk the car over like so many drivers do, zig zagging erratically.  I kept my spacing, and sped up to keep safe distance... :blank:

Haven't seen an increase in it around here ... looks like the offender would be in as much trouble as the innocent party if there was no place to go?

People don't hesitate to screw the "other guy" if they can do it without risk, like "forcing" their way into the other lane when the road goes from two lanes to one, but you'd think that they'd be hesitant to do that if the oncoming vehicle is a truck or SUV bigger than theirs ... ?

Yes , you are getting old  Haven't noticed any real change in driving habits lately , there have always been bad, overly aggressive drivers , may be more cars on the road today , dunno . Be careful out there , the life you save may be your own  :bike-037:

You'd think the offender would want to avoid a crash, but it almost looked like they saw the oncoming car take evasive action and that encouraged them to keep going.  The oncoming cars were all about the same size.

Times like that make me wish for a Peterbilt log truck.

I have seen it on occasion, forever. No I haven't seen 'more' of it lately.

Yes, you are getting old.

People assume other will get out of their way. Fun to not move or adjust when I can.

I've not seen an increase. Those that do that have poor depth perception, speed closure perception or just dumb perception.

I haven't seen an increase.

How do you get a higher number than 'incessant and inevitable"?

I sometimes think everyone in Nevada (and the surrounding states) drives with one eye closed, zero depth perception and no concept of closing speed.
