Title: Possible re-wire to use directionals as running lights and blinkers
Post by: giusto on August 27, 2015, 08:11:31 PM
Hello,

I have a 2001 Jackal and was wondering if there is a re-wire or retro fit flasher switch that will allow the use of directionals as running lights and blinkers?
Thanks for the help!!!

btw I spent a few hours in the Guzzi museum in Mandello a few weeks ago and it was freeking amazing...no AC and about 125 degrees on the 3rd floor but still amazing.

Replace the oem with a 3-wire, amber LED die.  You'll have essentially an '1157' type tail light bulb when you're done -- 'tail' mode is a marker light 'brake mode' is your blinker.  It will require a timer-based ass opposed to load-based flasher.  I do this all the time -- no point in having a perfectly good amber housing that's not lit up all the time.

I've used these on my BMW airheads - makes rear running lights, might work on front too???

I use the Hopkins run-stop-turn converter on the red-lense Grote lollypop lights on the rear of my Eldo.
Gives me normal turn signals, three running lights, three brake lights and is very noticeable.
Available at Wally World and Pep Boys.

I use LEDs like these (lots of sellers) when the socket and all is ruined, although I'm building them into my trike's new model A tail light housings.

They're about a $0.25-cent quarter's diameter and house two intensities of (in this case) amber.  You feed a third wire into the housing for connection to the headlight or ignition switch.  There are four leads on the bulb which make for running light and then a double-bright turn signal.  Solder the wire you ran in to the dim side, the turn to the bright side (use a 9v battery to figure that out) and tie the grounds together/connect to existing ground.  I glue mine into the old light socket. It wedges in to the socket pretty well.  The power drain is negligible and the light is acceptable.  You need to change your blinker box for an LED-type or it won't blink proper.

I could be wrong, but google Greg Bender at thisoldtractor.com. I believe he shows this conversion done somewhere on his site. Someone does, and it was done on an Eldorado I believe, so possibly someone else and not on his site. It's been a while since I've seen it.

Good luck.
