Title: Curious
Post by: slowmover on August 31, 2015, 10:39:15 AM
Wondering why on a V7 Stone the clutch lever has a cutout in it.The brake lever doesn't.Had to order a new one from bumping and breaking it and the new one has it too.

You got it.  The clutch lever breakaway leaves a stub, which you can use for actuating the clutch until the new lever comes.  The more pessimistic sorts, like me, keep a spare at home.  Why the brake lever doesn't have a breakaway, you'll have to ask Brembo.

Brembo does have breakaway brake levers.  Don't know why V7 isn't so equipped.

I've also noticed this on my 2014 V7 Special.

So you don't need a pair of Vice Grips in your tool kit?

I used a Dremel to cut a break-away notch into my lever.  In my mind the notch is there to protect the lever mount from breaking from a tip-over.  The lever sacrifices itself.

Then why aint it on the brake lever too?

Ah, design philosophy...

I like the concept of the clutch lever being sacrificial - I can see the designers being advised that doing the same thing on the brake side might be a liability issue.

The reason the brake lever isn't that way is because some ham handed fool like me will squeeze too hard and break it away.
Then no brakes at a time when you need them most.  Followed by Lawsuit time.

Only an inch,or so, at the end breaks off. You still have a brake lever long enough to stop the bike.

My Sport 1100 and V11 LeMans both came from the factory with breakaway front brake levers...

I know why.  It's because bikes always go down on their left side, never the right side.

In Australia they go down on the right side. Kiwis know how to ride, they don't fall off.
