Title: speedhut tacho
Post by: tris on August 31, 2015, 01:43:43 PM
So - there's been a death in the family The Velia tacho has died

Speedhuts offering looks favourite at the moment but if anyone has fitted one to a 95 Cali I'd appreciate some advice

1) which size fits? 3 3/8" looks like it might be too big?
2) can it be triggered from the existing feed

Cheers

Tris

I have Speedhut tachs on both a 70 Bonneville and a 97 Harley Buell. The tachs have several signal options built in to accommodate any battery powered  ignition system . They look functional ,have steady needle movement with no delay, are accurate, and are a bang for the buck...However, they are not weatherproof but Speedhut will on order make seal the gauge face. You will have to fabricate a mount. Usually takes about 3 weeks..Made In Utah USA....Go for it... :thumb:

I have a speedhut tach on my Cal II, works perfect. a couple of fellows here helped me out with the installation, but it was very easy. I even got the moto guzzi logo printed on the face of the tach. I ordered mine in dark blue, but its a bit brighter than the blue on my old cal II, I should have gone with a white face, like some of the older bikes.
Speedhut is a great company to work with.
Rick.

I've posted about Speedhut in the past.

I've been using their tachs for a while now. Excellent quality and features.

They offer one of the very few tachs for a single-fire, single cylinder (BMW).

I put 4 Speedhut gauges on my LeMans:
GPS Speedo
Tach
Oil Pressure
Volt

The tach was easy to install and I was able to use the signal wire that fed the ITI unit. Other guys over at the V11LeMans site have also replaced the Veglia with Speedhut.

FYI - you can order the tach with a remote button - or with the button in the glass. I think it is worth the $10 extra for the remote button - you only need it once for setup, then you can disconnect it. Also make sure to tell them it is for a motorcycle and they will give it some extra silicon to make it water-tight.

Thanks everyone

Looks like the right solution plus it's about 1/2 the price of a repaired Veglia over here !!!

Measuring day today I think 😁

3-3/8 is the right size, you install it without the rubber grommet that was on the Veglia

Scud's setup is stunning don't you think? Left and right facing eagles even.

Notice his tach is sitting at idle speed, the units use a stepper motor so they stop wherever you turn the power off, use the kill switch and it will go back to zero.

KR - I'm a bit puzzled.

The Cali has pods so does the 3 3/8" just slot in and how is it secured in place??

Cheers

PS - yes it is a great install

That's the only tricky part, the Speedhut comes with a large ABS nut that is useless for a bike so you need to make your own arrangement. For my Vll Sport I glued a scrap of aluminium on the back with a stud to poke through the back cover.

I presume you are referring to the chrome EV covers, just make something similar to the Veglia arrangement and space it off the back with a bit of ABS pipe perhaps. The 3-3/8 is a snug fit, it doesn't need much.

What did you do Scud?

Thanks guys. Kiwi Roy and some other guys over at V11LeMans.com helped a lot.  We had quite a long thread on Installing Speedhut Gauges:

http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19038

I used some home-electric parts to rig up something that worked with the stock buckets. More details in that link above.

Glad it helped. FYI - Speedhut puts everything on sale periodically. So if you're not in a hurry, you can watch for one of their sales.

Even Better

I planed not to do the change out until I park the bike up for the winter and certainly not until after my trip to The Somme Battle Field in November

Watch this space!

First off I will report that Speedhut has 20% off until the 30th for 'Black Friday'

so with that helpful hint out of the way, i do need a little help

Has anyone fitted one of these tachs to a smallblock? I see many have them on v11 powertrain bikes but I assume they plug into the ecu? I have a mechanical pickup.

I have a single pot dash that fits an 80mm veglia  instrument, I am looking to put a combo tach/gps speedo in that hole.

What can you tell me? most of the stuff on their site looks like it is for automotive applications?

You can wire the tach to one of the coils.
Yes they were for automotives but they will add silicone to the glass if you tell them it's for a bike.
I recommend you get the reset button plug at the rear.

Don't forget the Guzzi logo.
