Title: T3 coil connection help
Post by: Ambogal on September 01, 2015, 12:17:11 PM
Tried to be a kind soul and helped a Norton guy from Canada.  His coil went bad and I let him take one of mine to get him home.  He returned it right away but I didn't reconnect the coil right away because I had a terrible car accident and really couldn't do anything at home.  Anyway it has been disconnected for so long that I can't remember what went where.  I had too much confidence in myself and thought that I'd remember what went where and didn't make a drawing.   :violent1:    Luckily he did "bundle" the wires so I just need to know WHAT PRONG THEY GO ON.

Front coil......It's OK.   Has a black wire connected to a screw on the top of the coil.  The other side has a 2 connector prong.  That has a white wire connected to it. The other prong is not used.

Rear coil.....Has a 2 and a 3 prong on top of it.   The other end of the white wire from the front coil is connected to it along with a red wire coming from the front of the bike.  They are bundled together so I need to know what prong they go on.  That will tell me that the other red and other white wire coming  from the front of the bike go on the other prong. I will NEVER disconnect anything without making a drawing first....I did know better but just didn't do it.  Can't trust my memory at my age.

The bike has a Dyna II ignition if you need to know that.

By the way, I will have this bike up for sale before the end of the year.   It's in good shape.

I can take a picture of the ones on my CX100 and post it if you think that would help. I would think it would be pretty similar.

That might help.   A few of the original wire connections are not there any more.  Stock handlebar switches are replaced by something else - no kill switch.  The old wires are there but are taped up and I didn't want to open anything else up the way my luck is going and also trying to do the least amount of work as  possible as I'm still in pain from the accident.  Going to see a spine specialist tomorrow.

(+)(15) terminal wires to the other coil (ign (+)  )

(-)(1) wires to the points.

If you have the factory coils, they should have either an "R" or a "-" printed on one side, and a "+" on the other side. You should also have a Green and a Red coming from the distributor, The Green goes to the R or - of the left cylinder coil, and the Red goes to the R or - of the right cylinder coil. You mentioned black... are you sure it isn't' a very dark green?

The White from the main harness goes to the + and then there is a jumper that jumps from the + of the left coil and + of the right coil. Sometimes that same + goes to a side-stand switch.

I don't trust my memory. I always think I'll remember how to put something back toghether, but I always seem to forget some detail. Photos (lots of them) are now my shop assistant..

I hope that helps. The wiring is based on stock setup. Not sure about Dyna, should be similar.

^ based on that, just scratch what I wrote - Looks like the wiring is completely different on the Dyna vs the stock setup

Just had a long conversation with the Master.....Charlie Mullendore.  With the Dyna wiring diagram (I didn't have a copy of that)  and with the help of a few posts here, I think I can get it.  How I missed seeing the "1" and the "15" on the top of the coil is beyond me.  I'm done for the day. Some times (like right now), the pain in my head is so bad I can't concentrate.

Thanks everyone....I'll try to get back to it on Thursday.

As usual, any and all comments are appreciated!
