Anyone race pigeons?
We've had one camped out at our place for a few days now. Wife was able to get a photo of the leg band close enough to make out "SLI".
That'd be the Salt Lake Pigeon Club as best we can tell from the American Racing Pigeon Union.
That's a hell of a long way from Salt Lake to Eastern, PA. OR, do folks box up their birds, ship them cross-country to be released, and hope for the best?

That bird's GPS failed . I knew this didn't look like Colorado

He may just be acquiring additional satellite info.
I found a phone number from the American Racing Pigeon Union website for the club secretary in SLC, and rang him up. He's a completely nice older sounding man who confirms they're often shipping birds out to race locations where they're released in groups. Its' got one band on the left leg that's a frequency chip (RFID) that will automatically log its' arrival time when it gets home.
I wish we could get the full sequence of #'s on the band. The gentleman says that would allow him to identify the owner.
Sounds like an interesting hobby.

For the people, I'm sure it is. Wonder if the pigeons are down with it .... ? Sounds like a lot of work.

Pigeons are probably just winging it. For the people, I'm sure it's as exciting as golf. Or checkers.

Seems that when all of our modern communications systems suffer their inevitable failure , these pigeons might become really important , probably more effective than smoke signals or runners  Hmm , Wildpigeon might replace WG

Plus, if you didn't like the message, the messenger would go down well with a nice marinade, slow roasting, and hoisin sauce ....
