Title: 2014 Stelvio - strange noise
Post by: tarsky68 on September 06, 2015, 11:27:37 AM
While riding my Stelvio yesterday, it went through about a 45 minute period where there was a chirping/squeeling sound coming from the throttle area.  It would do it for 10 seconds, then nothing for 5 minutes, then again...very erratic.  I stopped for a break and to look it over, but couldn't find anything wrong.  After that, it didnt do it any more.  This was a LOUD, very noticeable sound.

Any ideas?

Thanks

What is the throttle area? Do you mean the cables, the bars, underneath, in front? Most likely, the sound is coming from some place else. Do you have a mobile phone or GPS mounted close by? Sometimes they will make strange sounds.

Check for a small bird caught under or near the tank. Not kidding. Might have a BBQ'd one in there.

That's just the clutch coming apart, no biggie, isn't the 1st one.

Is your throttle sticking or having trouble returning?

Loose hand guard?

Loose hand guard?

Factory mirrors with turn signals in them? That can be an issue (do the euro conversion): http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2013/04/euro-turn-signal-conversion.html
Sometimes the handguards will make noise on the cover, brake handle, or other place. Make sure they are tight and not rubbing on anything

That is the first place I would be looking

I had to put a velcro pad between the master cylinder and hand guard in order to stop a similar noise.  It was driving me nuts!

I thought a squeeling/shreeching tranny was a common issue on the NTX's?   Do a search here, there is a thread started by a friend of mine right after he bought his a couple years ago.  Others chimed in with a similar noise when COLD.

Sorry for the delay...been a busy week.

The sound is very mechanical in nature.  It's definitely NOT two parts rubbing together.  It's a high pitched screech that sounds perhaps like a hydraulic or pneumatic problem.  Unfortunately, it comes and goes and only while riding so it is really hard to tell where it is coming from.  As I described, it seems to be coming from around the throttle, but I could be wrong.

Of the replies so far, I would say that the clutch/tranny may be the problem.  Like I said, so far there are no other symptoms...the bike runs fine while it is screeching.

Guess I'll have to take it to the dealer and hope that it makes the noise for them.

Thanks for the responses and let me know if you have any other ideas.

The clutch problem occurs when cold on the first few take-off's of the day. after that they seam to be fine for the rest of the day. This doesn't sound like the problem your having. I wonder if it might be a pinched evap line, they will sometimes make a noise like that.

I had a similar sort of sound happen like that right before the stock mirror disintegrated.

Could it be the alternator belt? Worth checking.

The bike has had the stock mirrors swapped out by the previous owner...it has regular mirrors and the turn signals are mounted onto the body.

Evap line?  hmm, how would I check that?

Also, the sound does not just happen when cold.  The other day, I rode it for a good 20 minutes before the noise started.

Maybe I can get my GoPro mounted onto something and get lucky enough to capture the sound while recording...I'll try that ASAP.  It's raining like crazy today.

Thanks all

I had a squeak from the right hand throttle body area, happened when twisting the throttle, riding or not. Turned out to be the spring on the bottom. Quick blast of WD40 fixt it.
Was suprisingly loud

Also, check you bar end weights. If they are loose the noise will be amazing.

I wouldn't have thought of that one, for sure.  Just went out and both bar end weights are tight...so it's not that.  I'm pretty sure that it is clutch/tranny related.  It sounds like a slipping clutch, but oddly enough, there is no bucking or other indication that the clutch is slipping.  Going to search for those other posts now.  Thanks all!

Thanks for the info.  My issue doesn't seem to be related to the throttle position or movement at all.

Update:  after riding it some more, the issue got bad enough that it was easily reproduced.  It turns out that it's a driveshaft issue.  I'll get more details from the dealer soon, but the short story is that somehow there is a wobble in the driveshaft that is causing the squealing issue.

For reference, this is a 2014 Stelvio with under 4k miles.

Did you find out what your noise was?
