Title: 2003 California Titanium
Post by: Gwyll on September 09, 2015, 05:58:47 PM
Hi,  My bike started tapping earlier this week.  So I topped off the oil and rode it another day.  It ran a bit better but started tapping again. This morning I stayed home from work and took of the valve covers.  There is no valve clearance adjustment for this '03 California.  There is some play in the left exhaust valve.  Now I'm thinking bent rod or??? Any advice?

Hydro engine which means no valve adjustment. Same thing happened to my Titanium and it had worn the front lobe off. I recommend a trip to the dealer to see if the recall has been done.

He read Hydro and Recall, Googled it, now trying to sell it.

If the valve spring caps are shiny aluminum and the adjusters(where they should be) looks like they were snapped off at the adj nut, it has most likely had the LAST fix done to it.

If the valve spring caps are a dark color   and  the adjuster(where they should be) are smooth and no adj nut, it needs the last fix.

Yes, these unfixed motors are still out there.  Been 3yrs since Guzzi made a batch of kits that I know of.
Been 10yrs since those Hydro's were made and the final fix.

I would go to dealer w/VIN like Bruce says.

Sad but might be true.. that Hydro motor was one of the stupidest things Guzzi ever did wrong.

It could also be a simple collapsed lifter.

Did the OP post the bike in the classifieds?
