Title: NGC: dinghy
Post by: Peter from Sch'dy on September 10, 2015, 08:20:37 PM
My dad built a 15ft dinghy out of 3/16 lauan held together with fiberglass. Nice light stable pond fishing platform. I need to store it and the garage is full of bikes. Looking for ideas. Can it be wrapped in plastic or will it rot. I live in upstate NY so it'll see everything weather-wise.

Best,
Peter

Is there any wood exposed, or is it all encapsulated in epoxy and glass?

It's covered with enamel but the glass nor resin extends far beyond the joints.

Too late now- but you should always sheath the outside of the boat with a layer of cloth and epoxy.

Put it upside down on sawhorses.  Make a ridgepole out of 1x3 cheapo spruce strapping so the tarp does not sit on the flat bottom. Finally, wrap the boat but don't seal the bottom (some bungee going from side to side under the skiff will do).

The idea is to allow for some air flow. As the boat is not sealed with resin, you have to allow the surface to breathe a bit. Yes, making the frame will be more of a PITA- but it's the price you'll need to pay.

Hang it from the rafters with a kayak hoist after you wrap it. :boozing:

Interesting choice of wood for a dinghy.

I'd make a pole frame next to the garage and use the boat for a roof.  Drape a tarp over it.  Now you can store things from the garage under it, leaving room inside for the dinghy.   :thumb:
