Title: about time for another V7R rear tire

All,

After Saturdays World Guzzi Ride I decided to clean my 2012 V7R up, check for loose stuff etc.  Inspecting the rear tire revealed typical squared off pattern (this is Gulf Coast of TX, few curves here) and tread depth down to maybe less 1/8 inch.  Bike mileage is about 13K and this is tire number 2 on the back.  Looks like I am close to needing a third tire.  Fall brings more riding miles and more wet weather.  Traction is important on slick roads etc.

The Pirelli Sport Demons are a fine tire, but wow do they wear out fast.  Could be partly our rough secondary roads.  The squaring affects handling a bit I think:  harder to throw into sharper turns.

How many miles are you guys getting out of a rear tire on a small block please?

I only have one data point, but my Demon was showing tire treads by about 7k.

I've currently got a Pilot Activ that most here think should last longer, and offers decent traction (my gut is to say maybe not quite as much stick as the Demon, but it has not fallen short at all).

Yeah.  I'd look at the Michelin Pilot Activ.

I really liked the tire on my Cal Bassa.

If you have anothr 1/8" of traction you should easily get another 500-700 miles out of the tire taking you to an average of 6,750 miles per rear tire. That ain't too bad.

Just put a new rear on my V7R at 6,500 went with Pirelli again. I could have put another 500 or more on the tire but I prefer to be pro active in the tire department.

Roads up here are chip-seal (or worse) so pretty mean spirited toward tires. I have been through 2 sport demon and one battle BT45 with a fourth installed about 2k ago. Average is around 5k miles. Pirelli's are stickier and feel much more planted (especially in wet) but there's nothing wrong with the Bridgestone either. Have a set of Pirelli Scorpion Trails to try out next summer. Expect them to wear fast but work better in highway construction zones.

There's a spreadsheet tyre history of my V7C in the Files section on the MG_750 Yahoo forum (may not be quite up to date, I'll have to check). On the V7 Special, I replaced the original Sport Demon at 18,000km (11,000 miles), and now the Pilot Activ on the rear needs replacing (today) after some 20,000km (12,000 miles).

Here's an attempt to import the current V7C stats as a table - kilometers look more impressive than miles

Thanks guys.  Likely I will put another 500 miles on or so, then take it to MPH and have Mike and his gang replace it.  Likely I will stick with the sticky Pirelli.  Hope to start the long awaited motorcycle camping this fall. All my camp gear is still stored and unavailable as part of our house upstairs repair. After Oct 5th, then a trip to see my mom:  game on for a lot more riding and that dreamed motorcycle camping.

By the way, my buddy at CVX did get his deserved severance.  Found out for sure today.  His last day is about the same as mine.  He plans on elk hunting, then making wine from his vineyard.  He will do ok.

Malik, how the ?? do you do that? 16K miles on a rear sporting tire? Of any make? Was there paint left on your rims?
I couldn't get that out of a front tire even if I lived south where roads are paved like glass.

The last front on the V7 Classic was actually 34,400 MILES. And it beats me, too. This tyre was put on by a motorcycle tyre speciallst in Melbourne. That's all they do. So it must have been a hell of a job, &'or Avon were experimenting with a compounds, and one got away. I'm not expecting the like in future. But then, I did get 42,000k (26,000 miles) out of another AM26 on the Carberry V Twin. So Avon's accidents, or "unintended market research" must not be too uncommon.
