Title: Black V7 Stone 2014: Sumpspacer...where to buy from?
Post by: akhileshb@hotmail.com on September 24, 2015, 01:02:29 PM
I just bought my first motorcycle ever: a V7 stone in black, 2014 model. I am in the process of breaking it in (done 130 miles so far).
I have been reading about the sump spacer and think it is a good idea to get. My question was:
Do i get it from Guzzi power (who does not seem to have them in black)
http://www.guzzipower.com/store/Sumspacer.html

OR from guzzitech, who has them in black.
http://www.guzzitech.com/store/product/gt-rx-v7-sump-spacer-kit-black/

I really want a black one to go with my black stone v7. Would it hurt to get the one fom Guzzitech?
thanks in advance

I have the Guzzitech spacer and it works fine.  No experience with the Guzzi power one but others have used it with no issues .  I do think the black color fits the look of the bike better.

Mine's GuzziTech.
Works a treat.

I kinda felt like Ed Millich @ Guzzipower was the real originator of this and it was his race bike that was sorta the research and vetting for the smallblock.

For that reason I chose Guzzipower for my purchase, and had it powdercoated black after. No big deal to me, and it felt like the right thing to do.

I've got nothing against Todd and Guzzitech, and he's had much more of my money over the years on other things.

Before you take the plunge, you might want to consider why you want one of these.  The recent V7's have a very efficient blow-by oil recovery system and the bikes, at least over the 16,000 miles or so that I've ridden them, consume virtually no oil between changes.  Why carry around extra pounds of oil and metal, and lower your crankcase bottom, making it more vulnerable, when there's no real need to.  Folklore aside, there's no evidence that the oil runs cooler when there's more of it in the engine.  For that matter, there's no evidence that there is any problem with the modern synthetic oils running hot.  I'd recommend paying more attention to making sure you use the right kind of oil, not only the specified 10W60 weight synthetic, but also the specified API grade SG (and not the later API graded oils with less ZDDP).

Maybe, like me, he finds a modern air cooled engine of this size just plain odd to hold so little oil and increasing it another quart to almost what my wife's 696 holds gives him the warm and fuzzies.

Well, then you must really be spooked by the fact that the new 6-sp gearbox holds only half as much oil as the 5-sp box it replaced, and the recommended change interval is 3x longer.

Had a GuzziTech on mine since '09, very good quality. Consider this; instead of black on black get the bare aluminum version and mirror polish it out or have any chrome shop do it for you. The contrast looks good on a V7C. Oh, and congrats on your new bike, a good choice!

I don't think changing the oil on the 6-speed box was necessary at 600 miles, either.  There was little or no debris in the oil.
I won't argue about whether it was necessary, but it is specified in the manual.  Mine was like new, too.

It's about oil consumption and capacity not cooling and that part of it is fact not folklore. Ed Milich of guzzipower designed and built these after his then significant other had her new breva 750 inexplicitly while on a long trip start suddenly using oil and then suffered real damage. There were other instances documented here and elsewhere. Seems to be random as to which bikes suffer and when though more likely when new Also obvious that most any bike might get there if you keep and ride it long enough. Given the tiny oil capacity to begin with doesn't take much loss before things get interesting. Assuming you stay on road and avoid jumping curbs and the like seems to be plenty or clearance under the sump even with the spacer. I haven't had a small block in along time but if I did always seemed like cheap insurance to get the spacer esp at Ed's lower price.

Why would I be, gearboxes are not crankcases.

Guzzibob, in the interest of complete disclosure, what SIB is referring to is we've not heard a single report of the new 1TB mirror that debuted in 12/13 use any oil.

Mine doesn't seem to use a drop between changes.

So the spacer may not be "necessary" but I'm still glad I have it.

Well said.  Doesn't sound broken to me.

The sump makes it easier to drain my oil pan without the EVAP canister getting in the way.

Of course that's not a problem on the V7II since they relocated the canister.

Sam makes some great points here.  These engines are a whole new breed from the old 750s that used to consume oil.  I don't think there's been a single report of the new SBs being oil-thirsty.

Thanks everyone for your insights, and welcomes.
Based on some earlier replies, I bought the black sump extender from Guzzitech.
I will get it installed at the first service.
I talked to Donny, a certified Guzzi tech here in Tulsa, and he concurred that I should get the sump.

BTW, mine is a V7 2014, so 5 speed, no ABS, no traction control. I won't be taking it off road, so not worried about extended sump. It does have the single throttle body though.
Since then I also had a windshield put on it, as well as changed the mirrors (oh what a difference!).

I would post before and after pics but I am not sure how on this forum.

Donny will do a good job for you over at Kinetic Playground.  I just bought a Racer from Paul yesterday, welcome to the Famiglia!
To post pics you have to host them on an external site, then post the link.  Like Photobucket...
Cheers!

Look, I like the sump, I have it.

But either Donny just told you what he figured you'd want to hear or he's not up to date on the Smallblock.

"Should" is a lot different than "could".

With the new, more svelte, head shape of the single TB motors also came a redesign of the Pistons and rings. This does appear to have defeated the 'Vanishing oil' problem. Sump capacity is still small but it doesn't seem to matter. (Shrug?)

Precisely why I wouldn't say "should" but I wouldn't discourage someone who wants to feel warm and fuzzy about capacity.

Yes, thanks for the clarification. Let me correct myself:
Donnie did not say i SHOULD get the sump, but he did not say i should NOT either, Overall it  seems like a good idea to me. This is my choice personally. Nothing I say here should be attributed to correct or incorrect advice given by anyone else.

Yes, I am very comfortable with Donnie's expertise and advice.
He actually installed the windshield and mirrors for me and was great about it.
In all honesty, having a certified Guzzi mechanic like him around was a major factor in my selecting the Guzzi.
And Yes, I bought mine from Paul as well (another great guy! ).
Below are pics before and after the windshield and mirrors install.
