Title: 2003 Stone Engine squeak
Post by: Rico88 on September 27, 2015, 01:48:10 PM
So my stone metal has been occasionally making an engine squeaking noise. It isn't super loud, and doesn't happen on a regular basis. Sometimes it happens when it is warming up. Other times it happens when I am riding. It is peculiar to me that it is so unpredictable on when it happens. it sounds similar to when i have had a loose belt on a vehicle before. But the guzzi is chain driven, so I am wondering if it is that. However when I have had a loose belt, it has made the noise on a regular basis, where this does it sporadically.  Any suggestions on what it may be?

Leaking exhaust gaskets. Exhaust pipe rubbing something. Fuel line vent valves (though that isn't very loud).

It's either a mouse that took up housekeeping in your air box or the throwout bearing.  Or maybe something else.  Like the gas tank rubbers are dry or the voltage regulator is going out.

Personally I suspect the mouse.

Probably due for head retorque, and a rocker adjustment. Tighten the exhaust pipe header bolts and check the clamps on the throttle bodies. If it is still there then look around for gremlins living in the airbox  :bike-037:

Hydro engine?  Recall done?

Recall was done about 5k miles ago. (Huge headache with that one..) I also replaced both exhaust gaskets about 4K miles ago because they were leaking after the recall was done. It doesn't sound like it did when the exhaust gaskets were leaking. After hearing it again I'd almost say it's more of a chirping noise. I've tried to record it on my phone, but it never last long enough to do that. I think I heard it last night when I was cruising on the freeway, but it's hard to hear it with the wind when I'm going freeway speeds. And it had stopped by the time I got to slower speeds. It happened for all of 2 seconds when my bike was warming up earlier. Then when I was playing with the throttle at different rpms I couldn't get it to reproduce the noise. The fuel level hasn't seemed to be a factor. I don't know if I've heard it when it's been full full. But I heard it a little today only after putting 30 miles on this tank of fuel. (I've also heard it when the tank was almost on empty, and somewhere in between).
