Shaggy Mane

second one looks like an Amanita DEFINITELY dont eat

This page states that the Shaggy mane is edible. I'm not telling you to not eat it, or to eat. I am strongly suggesting that you do more research.

DOnt eat
Shaggy Mane
See page 9 of the mushroom guide link above, Missouri Conservation says the shaggy mane is edible <shrug>
-
I would say that unless you've taken a course directly focused on the identification of mushrooms, you've got to have rocks in your head to pick wild mushrooms.
-
Shaggy Mane is edible, just not very good. Mushy & slimy at best. If you want to eat them, pick young before any sign of black spots or slime, saut very briefly.. Can be used in stuffing or soups etc,, not very good as a stand alone
-
Dude, why risk it. The grocery store is down the street. Don't you remember how "Into The Wild" turned out?

Take a look at the destroying angel.

Just because a mushroom is 'edible' doesn't mean it's tasty :food
If I was starving I the woods, sure. If I wanted a good mushroom, well plenty of fish in the sea

Chicken of the woods, we have those all over the place here.

Many people gather and pick 'shrooms here in the Ozarks, they just keep the conservation guide nearby see the link above. It's very detailed.

Yep
Also called a death cap
Mushrooms are tricky to forage, you really gotta know your stuff. I am pretty good on shrooms, I still double check 90% of what I forage with a real mycologist buddy. All/most of the tasty edibles in my area I know. I'm less knowledgable about the poisons ones... If I can't identify it as one of the 6-6 delish ones, I just leave it be
-
Yep
Also called a death cap
The Death Cap and the Destroying Angel are not the same, other than they're both deadly.

They are both Amanitas

Here on the North West coast we get lots of mushrooms during the wet season. I found this local author wrote a good illustrated book on mushrooms - set up as a field guide with quick references and lots of safety tips and explanations.
Called "All The Rain Promises and More" check out the inside story...

On our farm we get:

and

and more!
I dont eat them though....

They are both Amanitas
No argument with that, but Amanita describes more than 500 species and varieties, many of which are popular, edible mushrooms.
-
All mushrooms are edible. At least once.

:1:
And the people that survive with at least some of their liver function intact say that they tasted pretty good!!
If you want to pick 'shrooms, take a class and join a mushroom club so that you know what you are doing. Too many stories out there of people who thought they knew what they were picking but didn't. I find it kinda puzzling how people will eat just about any mushroom they find in the woods but would not do the same with plants.

I saw a show on the mushroom supply business in Washington state that was very interesting.
Rare mushrooms are picked in that state and within hours are in Japan. Very efficient handling and sorting, very quick marketing! Some of the varities are extremely expensive and fragile.
There is a also a whole cult on the finding of truffles, for example, using dogs and pigs to hunt the fungi hidden underground.

Hen/chicken of the woods......yum!
-
These hilljacks here in Indiana go nuts for that chicken in the woods but they only call it sheephead.I've seen it in farmers markets in Chicago called hen of the woods and them new age yuppies pay crazy prices for it cuz it's all natural ,dude.
-
I like shaggy mane, but only then picked early and cooked right away in something kind of delicate, like a little butter and garlic. The mushrooms in the picture are far past eating. This inky cap genus has an unusual self destruct mechanism, when the spores are all ready to go it just melts into black goo. There might be some potential for some kind of gourmet sauce here, but I doubt it.
I don't know, to me mushrooms seem pretty safe, if you eat only what you know. There are thousands of species around here in the damp parts of the Pacific Northwest, so it might seem kind of pointless to go out there knowing only a handful of species - but the common and good ones really are few. I think the exception might be Agaricus, the genus that includes grocery store mushrooms, which has a few that aren't so good for you and they all look kind of similar to me. But chanterelles, the boletes, morels, etc. - nothing tricky there. That's how it looks to me, but you have to judge for yourself whether you can rely on yourself to see the difference.
-
If it keeps raining here there ought to be plenty soon.
