Hi
I am working on the final drive of a V11 Sport 2001. The pinjong is locked in position with a castle nut. I seek a tool to open this nut.
Anyone been there - done that - and can tell me which tool they used?
I need also to know the torque when I am to close the nut again.

I got one made by my then tame machinist who has since died. You want I send it to you Rolf?
As for the torque? About a quintillion mile tons!

There must be a professional tool out there!!!!!
If not - I am going to make one - as always top professional.
Let us see if anyone else chimes in.
If nobody except you (and me soon) have this tool - does this mean that nobody hav been there to change the sealing ring or bearings?

Why do you need a special tool for a castle nut? I've always just pulled the split pin and then used an ordinary socket.
Would someone please enlighten me?

He's probably talking about that stupid "special" nut like they used on the front axle of the Centauro. :rolleyes: No doubt off a WW2 Fiat fighter plane. :smiley: They had a barrel full and had to use them somewhere.. just my guess.

Yeah, I am going to have to change the tires on the Daytona and I was wondering what I was going to do about that nut.

Many just used vise grips (!) and then put a normal nut on it. I made a simple tool you can borrow if you want. Assuming I can find it, of course.. haven't seen it for a while. :rolleyes:

Ah yes, I used a pipe wrench, and replaced with a normal nut.
In this case I suspect the 'special' nut may be required.

I have a special tool that I had made professionally back when I had the dealership. I don't think an officical tool exists. I am happy to send it to you as well....

Nah, the V11 bevelboxes are completely different to the earlier Tonti and early Spiney boxes. They have a weird two part split bearing with rollers and balls to take end thrust on the pinion and the pinion depth is controlled by shims under this bearing assembly between it and the box casting. The whole lot is secured in the box by a huge castellated ring nut that is done up hernia-inducingly tight, (Best bet is to stick some heat info the casting as you're trying to undo it or you'll bust your chuffer-valve getting it undone!) it's much larger and very different from the wheel spindle nuts.
Rolf, I can't post pics on the board at the moment but PM me yer email addy and as soon as I get the chance I'll dig the tool out and take a pic to send you. I have to go to Sydney to pick up a Griso tomorrow so it won't be until Friday at least.

It is another one of those great inventions designed to prevent owners from working on their own machines.
That is the sole purpose of such a nut.

Sorry I misread the post .....too early to read and comprehend. This is for the front axle nut used years ago. The "castle nut" reference make me think.... front axle nut!

Only Pete has clearly understood my problem.

When you open this, on part diagram 2 you will find this nut with a refering number 18.

As I said...I have the tool. Haven't seen it in a while but am sure I can dig it up. I had it made at great expense and used it one time on a V11 Lemans. Not sure where you are located Rolf but if you are Stateside, I am sure I can loan it to you. I really have no use for it.

I made a wrench for the BMW rear drive I have and used some heat to soften the thread sealer used on the threads. I used a piece of close fitting pipe with inserts welded into it to fit the slots. Not hard to make and worked well. I just had to change a seal so no real measuring involved and torque is a mute point with thread sealer slathered on the nut. Mike

Yes you are right. I am sorry that I forgot to refer to what MOTODUCK (Jeff) wrote. He was also correct - my error.
I live in Norway so purchase of a tool would be simplier than to borrow one.
Anyonbe else have knowlege of this tool?
