Title: Happy day gone sad...
Post by: V11 TT Pilot on October 01, 2015, 12:48:43 PM
Well gents,
This is a crummy way to get the new girl!!
The shipper strapped the bike down in the kickstand for transport, which ripped the small mounting bolt out of the flange, & bent this bracket. ((
My local dealer cannot seem to have any luck so far in locating this bracket.
Anybody have one laying around they could part with??
Riding season is rapidly ending here & I would love to take the girl on a date )
Thanks for any help.

Apparently something happened to the lever also, again, dealer says way backordered, although not AS critical at this time, but I am looking.

A motorcycle shipper SHOULD no better than to do that!

That's a bummer but don't let it stop you riding, after all the stand is only used while you are parked
It looks as though you may be able to straighten it, may need a thread insert though.

BTW, it's a nice V11 you have there.

Those are fairly fragile, and hard to find. I'd say Harpers, Eish, or M.I. would be your best bet.

If you have ox/acetylene and a vise.. you *might* be able to bend it back. Carefully, and with a good inspection after.

Too bad about that..

Beautiful bike!  Wow!  Can you take it to a welding shop (off the bike!) for a temporary repair?

That's a shame.  I had the same thing happen with my long kickstand once on the ferry.  The crew kept coming by and ratcheting the tie downs harder.  By the time the ferry docked the stand was visibly bent.

Someone here once said that if a part bent while hot, use heat to straighten it.  If it bent cold, don't use heat.  I'm no metal bender, but it somehow makes sense to me.  I think the bracket could be removed and straightened in a press.

I think the bracket could be removed and straightened in a press.

I believe it could also, I personally would not want to be the one to break the bracket though.  That would piss me off.

Now, is this the bracket as used on the '97 Sporti...?  Anyone happen to know...?

I could send you mine as the '97 is in long term storage and I will not be using the stand anytime soon.

If you can discern whether that is the correct part for yours, you can have this one until you find a replacement.  When I get home, I'll go have a peek at it and see if I can make out whether it is the same or not.

Lemme know if that is something you want to do.

Best,
Rob

If it breaks, more the better.  Then you can jig it to the proper angle and reweld it.

your shipper was STUPID!  inspect the block where the bracket mounts for anything like a hairline crack.. that could have been really bad if he went over any big bumps like RR tracks.
never tie down a bike on CS.

I have sold a few bikes and I cringe when the new owner loads them up and ties them down on the side stand. I voice my opinion and if they choose to continue I do not stand in their way. If someone bought a bike from me and uses a shipper and he tried to do that I'd pitch a fit. As KevM stated they (the shipper) should know better.

OOOOH, I agree he should have known better!!!!

I have a time sert kit already in hand, case is not cracked just stripped out.

I am reluctant to try bending this back to use with it only being a cast part.

But as a last resort I guess I will have no option.

Harper's say Guzzi says it is NLA (

Thanks for your help,
Chris

The bracket looks forged and can be bent easily when red hot...If you lived near Rochester NY I could repair for a cup of coffee....

Looks the same to me, and Guzzi being Guzzi it's hard for me to imagine having more than one that looks like that.
Still, I'd heat, straighten, and inspect before doing anything else.

Glad the case isn't cracked..

Have you checked whether this parted out bike still has its one intact?

Thanks for the knowledge. A good friend of mine owners a Chocolate factory not to far away & he has an awesome set of tools, so it is an option.

That part out bike's stand has been sold....been there...tries that..

Here's hoping the girl is more interested in your driveshaft than your kickstand.

Just so we are on the same page here.
The bracket DOES NOT need to be bent till it touches the case.
the bracket should be vertical but not touching the case.
There is a small spacer that fits between the bracket and the sump case.
Somewhere along the lines of a 3 -5 mm spacer. Used steel flat washers
 of varying thickness on mine.
Make sure whatever flavor of thread repair goes in straight and true. Use
as long of a bolt as you can without bottoming.
been there done that      :bike-037:

Andy has it right. The bolt and spacer are missing. There could be a small bend in your sidestand bracket, but if so, it's not not much.

I also suggest that you loosen the whole bracket - that huge nut at the top. When the whole bracket is loose, you can more easily get that bottom bolt in without cross-threading. Then snug up both bolts bit by bit.

Levers are easy to come by if you know what other bikes use the same clutch and brake master cylinders. See this thread over on V11LeMans.com for a list:

I like the Pazzo shorty levers - but with the list, you can find a cheap, used replacement if you prefer.

Contact WA MGNOC rep Dick Guthrie. His son crashed a Ballabio a few years ago, and he has many of the parts. It would not surprise me if he had one. I have his number if you need it.

Thanks Andy,

I have the spacer, bolt & a few other parts ordered already.

The KS assembly is off the bike at this point, awaiting further progress.

Thanks

I was able to heat and straighten the bracket on my centauro.  It's the same bracket as my V11 TT.  Look closely for small cracks as well.  The bracket is a forging and can be straightened and welded.

since the poem bracket cannot be sourced its a good time to have one made. send the bill to the shipper for the repairs.

a good fab shop should be able to mill you one out of some block aluminum.

Just thinking - this may not have happened during shipping. If, for some reason, the PO had the sidestand off, he may not have been able to get the small bolt started - and just left it that way. If it happened during shipping - either the bolt broke (and the threads are still in the case) or it rattled out and went AWOL, along with the spacer.

As for using it - look closely at the bracket - most of the force goes up where it clamps over the engine case and is held in place by the huge bolt.  I think you can get away with leaving it on the sidestand as-is for a little while.  Of course, putting all the bit back correctly is the best approach. But I don't think that bottom bolt really does much.

This is correct as on the Daytona and Centauro the mounting brackets for the oil cooler and chin fairing filled the gap.
This is a V11 bracket fitted to my Centauro with the chin fairing removed

I bought 2 used brackets and a center stand as these brackets are universally recognised as dodgy
If you can, get a hold of the V11 bracket. The gussets are larger and there is limited machining for that mounting hole where yours has stripped out which is why the earlier ones cracked.

Good luck!

Radguzzi, IDK if it is the same, I am the new kid on the block here, but what I am hearing & seeing in parts break down it is used on alot of the Guzzi's.

This happened AFTER the bike was picked up from the PO.

Jack, the PO is for sure a stand up guy & has offered to help in any way he can. I couldn't have asked for a better guy to buy a bike from!!

Also He sent me plenty of pix of the bike before I bought it, all was good.

Thanks
Chris

Not strong enough. Fix what you have..
