Title: B1100 Won't crank over with a spent battery!!
Post by: bad Chad on October 15, 2015, 03:48:51 PM
B1100 almost didn't start this morning.  Road to work thinking it would be enough to top up battery.   Hit starter after work and the starter clunks but won't turn the motor over.   Tried a jump from a woman I work with but it didn't help, I only had a couple minutes to try with the cables, so not sure it I left it jumped to the car to 10-15 min that it might have worked?   Is this a case of Startus Interrupts, or a bad batter, or ground?   Up until today I have had on issues, the battery is fairly new.

It's still at work so I have to figure out how to get it started tomorrow.

Measure the voltage at the starter motor , that will tell the tale . Good luck .

Startus Interruptus doesn't cause the starter motor to clunk.  With SI, simply nothing happens when you push the starter button.  Far as I know, with SI, the starter relay isn't engaged, so the starter solenoid doesn't even attempt to engage the starter.

I have had a glued-on field winding on a Valeo starter (BMW airhead) come unglued and bind the armature, with the clunk-clunk sound you describe, but that's probably a reach .... most likely something simple like a relatively new battery that went bad.  I had a brand new Yuasa last less than 12 months, probably due to poor prep by the dealer that sold it to me.  The identical replacement has worked for all of 2014 and 2015 with no sign of failing.

Wayne's your guy on this, but it sounds to me that maybe a magnet has come loose..

Ohio has it.

Can't be Startus Interruptus because that would prevent the solenoid from actuating and making the starter clunk.

Instead the problem is that the starter either isn't getting power to the windings or, more likely, that whatever power is available is insufficient to allow the starter to turn the motor.

Most likely it's a battery, wiring, or starter motor problem.

Start with battery and connections, then remove and check starter and solenoid.

Chad,     Just take the starter off the 650 to get it home.

When my B1100 did the starter clunk, it was the battery.

I've been told that the newer batteries are toast if they get below 10 volts. You have to keep them on a battery tender if not riding the bike.

I had to get a new battery for my Breva 1100 for that reason. It's on the battery tender when I not riding it.  The EV can sit for months and it won't drain down, it's all of that new electronics that drains it.

my bike never sees a tender and always start... until the battery is shot.. load test it to get truth..

Measure the voltage at the starter motor , that will tell the tale . Good luck .

Thanks for all the input ladies.  It really is neat to know that you guys are always happy to help a slob like me.   Through a 2amp charger on it for 4 hours and the Red Arrow roared to life!   Appears the battery is just tired.
