Title: Recommendations For Quality Machinist - Motorcycle But Not Guzzi Content
Post by: Bill Havins on October 29, 2015, 04:18:36 PM

I was visiting with the parts guy at the motorcycle shop where I trade and he asked if I knew a good machinist who could line bore the mains on an engine he is building.  Our local machinist has retired and sold all of his equipment so we don't have anyone local to do the job.

The parts guy, Donnie, showed me the engine.  It is a 2006 Kawasaki ZX14.  He bought it used.  When he opened it up he said the main bearing saddles just didn't look right.  One of the mains appeared to have been installed backward.

Rather than take the chance of building the engine and having the mains fail, he thought he'd go ahead and line bore the cases.  He asked me to post this thread to see if anyone could recommend a quality machinist to do the job.  I measured the crank and the bearing surfaces are about 15" outside edge to outside edge if that helps.

We appreciate your input.

Bill

I know someone who builds Yamaha engines for Legends cars.  I don't know if line-boring the main bearings is typical in those, but if you're close to Charlotte I could ask.
