Post by: toolittletime on November 01, 2015, 12:03:11 PM
Anyone know if these will fit on a 12 Norge?

Looking for something besides heated gloves, for our cold climate.

Thanks............T im

I used the ones from a Stelvio on my 2008 - fit easily with very minor mods. They do help in the cold and wet, and I also added a strip of LED amber lights wired in as turn signals. They are visible from both side and forward, and draw a lot of attention from other drivers.

I installed Stelvio hand guards also to my 2011 Norge. Perfect fit.  Did put a couple of washers under mirror mounts to raise it a bit though. Leave them on all year round.

Would you happen to have a picture of the lights mounted?

Thanks for all the replies............ .Tim

Cool idea --

I have a throttle meister on my bike, so I'm thinking the handguards wouldn't be compatible with a throttle lock ?

The Stelvio handguards can be used with a Throttlemeister installed - I have this on my bike (backup in case my cruise fails). What you need are some longer machine screws of the same type  as used on the Stelvio guards, some thin SS washers and some rubber washers. On the throttle side, you sandwich the washers between the guard and the end of the Throttlemeister, making sure two SS washers sit together between the Throttlemeister and the rubber washer  that sites next to the guard. On the outside, use a rubber washer and then the beveled collar for the machine screw. Some fine-tuning of the shims for the Throttlemeister pressure may need to be done.

On the left side, just use a SS washer and a rubber washer on each side of the guard's attachment point, with the rubber touching the guard and the steel to the outside of the sandwich.

Here are some photos of the LED turn signal strip on the guards, and how I installed them over the Throttlemeister (note the washers!)...

LED strips (available from a variety of sources, get the ones with genuine 3M adhesive for better results!):

ITSec as I source the hand guards (currently not on hand, so getting them from Harpers).  The LED strip you used; can you tell me how long or what the length of the strip used?  Thx

That particular product is a 12" strip, no cutting required. The brand is Alpena Flex LED, available from Autozone and other sources in a variety of colors; I chose that product because of the variety of colors, standard sizing (4, 8, 12, 18, 24" sizes available), and that it uses 3M auto adhesive. I used the 12" on both the handguards (in yellow) and on the back of my panniers (red-yellow-red, running-turn-brake).

I drilled a small hole on the handguard near the reservoir to pass the wire through; since these use a fairly thin wire, I enclosed it in shrink tube before lacing it in. I used a small two-pin molex connector at the point where I connected it to the existing turn signal. If you need to extend the wire, it's not a bad idea to step the gauge up a bit for the sake of durability; the ones on the strips are usually 22 or 20 gauge, and I normally use 18 or larger for anything I wire on a motorcycle.

For the ones on the back, I joined the three strips to a common heavier ground lead, and then took that and the three positive lines in a common shrink tube to the panel forward of the pannier. Behind that panel, I anchored a 4-pin molex connector so I could still disconnect the bag fairly quickly.

Is that a "long" throttlemeister in the photo?

Thanks

Indeed it is - while the longer unit is not needed for vibration reduction as it would be on a tubular handlebar, I prefer them for both aesthetic reasons and ease of use (especially with gloves on). OK, it's about $10-15 more, so I had to take off my red suspenders...

Washers between the bar weight and hand guard on the side nearest the handguard aren't needed for 2012 and up. An additional washer is needed between the bar and weight to allow the throttle to turn without friction.

Thank you folks!  I'm going to get some of those hand guards. I already have a long throttlemeister  I was concerned about that spoiling the fit.
