Title: All this Triumph talk....
Post by: Shorty on November 01, 2015, 08:11:44 PM
done got to me. 2001 Bonneville 790. I went over to Kansas today to drag this relic home. Bought it as a parts bike. Seeking title. Anyone have one?  Will give me something to do this winter. Lost a sidecover on the way home, dammit :violent1: About 12k miles. Needs quieter mufflers and new jets thanks to PO. Came with an aftermarket tacho, centerstand. I had an 01 before and regretted selling. So, now as my dad would say, I have one to s#&t on, and one to cover it up with....

Nice bike!  Loved that maroon and silver on the 01's.  And you've got the nice chrome valve cover, too.

In 2006, My good riding bud and I took two 790s from Cleveland Ohio across several states before arriving at the Four Corners (Monument Valley area) then headed north to Cody WY via Utah.  We then made a right turn and headed home.  Tom's was an early 2001 790 .... mine was only slightly newer, a Centennial Edition (2003 ..... post factory fire edition.)  Here's a short video of the 2001 at speed somewhere between Las Vegas, NM and Taos, NM.  Video quality is bad, since it went from Sony Hi8 to DVD to YouTube, and lost a bunch of resolution.  However, the audio is ok, and shows off the Bonnie twin at speed with TOR mufflers.

Enjoy your new ride!

I'm still enamored with my '03 T100, Shorty. It really is a pretty classic format...

Shorty- I hope you didn't lose the seat too.

Geez you lost a metal sidecover, those are a bit hard to find.  I think they shifted over to plastic ones in '04 or so...yours is just like mine was, a beaut I should have not sold, but my '08 is actually a bit of a better machine I think.

Yes, probably the only time the bike will see 85 mph (I'm a slowpoke) was in the back of the truck. (Local turnpike speed limit 75 mph) Sidecover gone. Seat was in the cab. It's true the bikes keep getting better. BUT there are only so many first year '01 Bonnies, and only so many made in England models. It is still important to some of us old farts.

I'm considering buying a new bike this winter (better deals?) and Triumph is high on the list.  Been a fan of the "new" Triumphs ever since they came back to the U.S. in 94 or 95.  My all time favorite is the 94 Speed Triple in fireball orange.  I need something more practical for 2 up touring now a days, though.  Have fun with your new/older bike, I'm rather jealous!

I expect that we will see a wave of the current Hinckley Triumphs on the market in the near future as the owners move out of them and over to the new models.

Very nice bike. I had an 01' green/silver, an 03' CE and an 06' scrambler. I deeply regret selling each one of them. The earlier bikes had metal fenders and side covers and of course made in England. Some of my buddies that still own the early ones have been doing some serious dissing of the new bikes, fuel injection was bad but now a radiator is true blasphemy.

That Speed Triple in orange is the scheisse. (http://www.vintagemotorcyclesonline.com/zenphoto/albums/misc/Speed-Triple11.jpg)  I rode one at the dealership. Seat height too tall for me. Ditto the Trident.

I have nothing at all against the Thai Bonnies or the new liquid cooled bikes. I would buy one. Triumph keeps building them better and better.

The new ones are super, but I'll admit that I like my metal bodywork, made in England status, and Keihin CVK carbs (real ones). Also...and I may be in the minority on this...I like the 360 degree, 790cc power plant. It is a wonderfully free-revving engine with a few intake/exhaust/tuning tweaks. With a more open exhaust, the sound is both familiar and soul-stirring; like a Meriden Bonnie with a big-bore kit! Definitely a departure from the sewing machine sound of a stocker.

That's looks really nice.  I have long admired the Hinckley Triumphs, and "All this Triumph talk" got to me too.  I rode this home from Dallas last weekend.  I think it is going to make a great 2up tourer, and is surprising capable in the twistys.  Here she is on NM 120 at the Canadian River gorge in NW NM.  A really great and traffic free road if you are ever in the area.

I had a new 03 Sprint which I should of kept . It was a blast to ride and never gave me a problem . I always keep my eyes peeled for one . In reality , it was the riding position that got to me but don't like admitting that ! Your Trophy has pretty comfortable ergonomics compared to the Sprint .
These new ones out for 016 sure look great but I know I won't like the sticker price ! The used ones are so reliable if they've been looked after and the prices are very reasonable . Enjoy your new ride .

Looking good, Guzzistajohn!  Nice shots.

Although I have seen many of those old Tigers, In that first picture the tank looks absolutely
Huge (not in a bad way).  How many gallons does that thing hold?  Seems like a good design to help keep some of the weight lower, which is an issue with my Trophy.

It's only 5 Gal. But I get 500 miles out of a tank. Most of that space under the tank is airbox. Yes, It's huge but I really don't have balance issues. It's been a great camping/touring bike. Approaching 60,000 miles. It's been tons of fun!

^ There we go! 40 mpg sounds about right. Even my Vespa doesn't get 100 mpg (though my wife's does).

I put a battery in the Bonnie. It would start, then stall. I worked the choke in and out to keep it running till it warmed up. (It was kept long term in a storage locker.) Fairly loud. Ran it around the block. First lap was pretty rough, needed to keep it above idle to run. Second lap, much better. Bike pulls strong, enough to remind me to flush and bleed the brakes.  I bought the bike without a title, but I got a bill of sale with a carfax report showing it not stolen. Now I will do a little investigation of my options. Would love to find a way to title it. If not, there will be some very happy ebay customers.  :thumb:

I had a difficult time sealing the intake manifold boots on my '03. The standard clamps just made the job difficult. I solved the problem with aftermarket intake clamps from BellaCorse...
http://bellacorse.com/shop/parts-for-triumph/engine/stainless-steel-intake-manifold-clamps/
Also, going with Thruxton needles, fattening up the idle mixture, and selecting the right main jets will transform the engine's behavior. You'll lose just a little gas mileage, but the response is far more linear...
