Title: Something Odd happening to the board?
Post by: johnr on November 03, 2015, 08:18:51 AM
Avatars missing, big black oblongs intruding in odd places????
I assume the mods are aware of this? Or is it just me?

We are aware John . but it seems to be a soft ware problem that originates at the user end .

Don't they flush backwards down there? Could be the problem!

My computer at work cannot handle all of the punctuation marks in some postings here, although it has not trouble with all other sites. On this site it sometimes displays black diamonds and question marks where there should be punctuation.

My home computer does just fine with those things - differences in software, no doubt.

Unlike many boards that assign server space to the uploading of members avatars, wildguzzi does not. Anyone can click on an interesting avatar and get that members profile page. From there, right clicking onto the avatar can Copy Image Location. That's a link of the image file that the member used for others to see the image. Links can be telling. Embedded into the path of many links is a users personal account that contains not only the avatar link but a lot of other information that may contain for example a members detailed location info. A member can tell the wildguzzi system nothing about location info but their avatar link is sharing it with anyone. The classic album system of storing images "for free" makes for easy pickins' into a members personal data/info when its discovered by the member that the original use for "sharing" select info is actually a plethora of personal data. I'm not saying that the potential vulnerability of data is proportional to its actual exploitation, it is instead a design consideration, just in case someone thinks themselves clever with an attitude that roams the country looking for the inventory of bikes that is often listed with each Post of some members.

A few weeks ago, I noticed an avatar with a cool looking motorcycle on it. So I followed the original link so I could see it full sized. The wildguzzi avatar upload algorithm tends to disproportionately stretch/shrink/crop images in order to turn otherwise megabyte sized files into avatar squinched imagery. So there I was, into this guys family album, able to see details of that MG custom job.
Personally, I don't care about where someone lives because I respect privacy. If a rider posts an image with their full license plate showing, I don't care about how clever I am or how open they appear to be with it.

After noticing how the wildguzzi system works, I then posted into a Reply about what members may use as alternative methods.
This could be free Cloud space offered by a lot of Cloud Providers. The links that my cloud generates are pretty difficult for the average Joe to trace into other data that I have and that's why I pay monthly for that account.
A free Google Drive cloud space is a way for members to disconnect their personal data from public sharing data such as avatars, family names, towns, etcetera .
Search the web for "free cloud" and it goes from there. Not all cloud space providers give you links (web address) to spread your avatars and other shared data around.
Using the Expandrive application is good to manage your cloud data as it is arranged into folder and path structure without a browser.  http://www.expandrive.com/ (http://www.expandrive.com/)

The following link is a Ted Talks with a guy who exposes some pretty sensitive info from the audience. Unlike hackers who are in it for their own clever wealth building, this guy came full circle and now provides valuable and life saving services with his knowledge.

Tried resetting my Browser (Chrome). No change.

I thought the avatar problem might be due to it's still being sourced from imageshack.
Tried to get one from photobucket but met with zero success.

I prefer to have an avatar as I like the idea of being able to put a face to the name. Irritating me big time!

Any hints on something I may be missing in the avatar department?

Another oddity I've noticed is that when you link to a thread from an email notification of a posting, it does not go to that persons post, but the most recent one in the thread.

As far as the goofy black question marks, that started for me at the board upgrade, with no changes made at my end.  If I compose a post in a text editor and paste it into the board, many of the unusual characters like the degree symbol, or an Omega, get changed to the goofy black thing.  I assumed it was because the board's character set is missing those characters.

Five characters, the square root symbol, a phi, an omega, a Euro symbol, and a TM trademark symbol, which all look correct in the preview I just did:

√ ϕ Ω

Edit:  Not meant as a complaint, as it's not a problem to me at all, just trying to contribute information.

Hasn't it always been that way ? Kinda makes sense John .

No Dusty, it hasn't. Used to be that when you followed the link from an email notification of someone posting it went to that persons post. As it should IMHO.

Probably because you are mis-spelling Avatar.

In Safari (Mac) I am getting a lot of square boxes with "?" in them.
If I open in Firefox and enter as a guest and put the pages side by side I find that wherever I get an empty square avatar box with a ? on Safari I look at the Firefox page and there is no square box at all. Those avatars that are appearing in Safari also appear in Firefox. But  those empty boxes with a question mark in Safari are completely absent in Firefox. Got figure but I assume it has something to do with WG not that it matters. But I do like my "burning man" avatar.

(sigh) Could be that Jim, but I still want to know how to do it.
