Suggest Scott State Park. Annie Oakley park in Oakley used to offer free camping not sure if they still do.

One time I was stranded in Colby waiting for embroidery machine parts and drove down to Oakley for something to do. I'd already seen the sod house in Colby 2X <SHRUG>
I don't remember Oakley being much more exciting.
I did learn an important lesson however.
UPS doesn't do overnight delivery's to Colby, Ks. or Liberal either for that matter.

John , it isn't the town , it is monument rock I am interested in . Full of fossils from the time when the continent was cut in half by an ocean .

Yea, except for the fact it's on I-70. I'd much rather do 160 or @ least 400. I'd rather have a vodka enema than ride 70 the whole way.

There are alternatives to I-70.

Yes, believe me, I've been to Kansas. Maybe not as much as Glider John and Daniel K, but I've BEEN to Kansas

Oh yea, I've met and worked with many a good Kansan, and Okies too for that matter. Heck I've even met a good Nebraskian or two.
There's nothing like the peace and solitude you get out on the plains. Too bad more big city folks can't enjoy it.

Little Orion is a good test of your map (or GPS software); likely it won't be shown.

I had a feeling we'd pull Daniel out in the open  I wonder if we could just throw out a tarp and a therma-rest by those rocks and call it home for a night? That would be a cool sunrise!

I only rarely ride I-70 in Kansas; there's hardly ever a need. Need to get to the rocks? Then you should be on state highway KS-4.
-
I concur with Daniels choice if Highway 4. I would be willing to lead a tour of Kansas hot spots. Speaking of Highway 4 there is also a very interesting motorcycle museum along it.
