Someday Dusty, I'll teach you the fine art of cutting and pasting, then maybe move on to photobucket and picture posting. It's like rocket surgery, only different

Melanie sure is good!
For some more Janis-quality singing, check out this duet with Popa Chubby and Dana Fuchs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNr3J6QDagk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNr3J6QDagk)

Janice Joplin has always been my favorite female rock singer. I was very disappointed when she died, but now through the WGC forum I am introduced to a reincarnation. Amazing! Thank you

She brought tears to my eyes.

Janis - lost way too early.
Actually a Blues singer swept up in the Rock movement.
The singer carrying on the tradition today is Beth Hart - think Janis singing in tune.

I'm sorry, she did a great job on the screaming part but IMO she really dropped the ball on the singing part.. Janis could sing..

There's only one Janis Joplin. When this XFACTOR model sings cry baby, it's a beautiful version, but when you listen to Joplin, its got soul. Just one man's opinion, and yes I would rather not hear Marvin Gaye music re'done' by adam lambert, maroon 5 or whatever. Nate

Yes! there's only ONE JJ,
But soul??? here's your soul bubba!
Etta James, I'd rather go blind

Exceptional. Thank you John.
PS: I agree with the 27 Club J+J+J.

Well , there is only one Bon Jovi (thankfully ) , that doesn't mean there isn't room for other talents to come along and reinterpret great songs . Remember , Janisherownself was reinterpreting lots of older blues classics , as have the Allman Bros , even Johnny Cash did some amazing covers of modern rock songs in his later years .

I played it with my eyes shut and heard Pearl.

......just hope she doesn't "lose her edge" now that she's clean and on the appropriate meds.
Great talent...glad she's getting it together.
Interestingly, upon first hearing her I thought: Janis Joplin channeling Etta James

You guys should check out Alabama Shakes.

Have to agree. I was waiting for her to get there. Just never did.
Real brave to try that song tho. One of JJ's very best imho

I have listened very carefully to my tape of Etta James' "I'd rather go blind" and I believe that Beyonce did a superior job of it in the film "Cadillac Records".

At the risk of getting flamed to a crisp , I gotta agree , although Etta was certainly a giant

Uhhh- I'd have to agree here. Belting it out is one thing- but range, holding a note, etc is singing.
In addition to being lovely to look at- Joss Stone definitely has "it".

Joan Osborne has never rated the commercial appeal she deserves. You want some down and dirty Memphis soul?

Thanks for the tip KRG, I'll check that out and give you my report. May change my whole outlook on Beyoncé. Most of what I've heard of her music is known as "catterwallin' " in my neck of the woods :thumb:
-
Joss Stone ? Like Joe Satriani , who couldn't bend a string if his life depended on it
Oh , I think some of you naysayers aren't really listening to MM, she exhibited at least a two and one half octave range , and her ability to hold and mold a note is pretty damn good .

It is always hard to tell whether you are hearing a better singer or better sound engineering when making these comparisons.
The Beyonce track is a lot "cleaner".

I'll still take Etta's version, call me nostalgic. Personally I'd prefer Davina and the Vagabonds version of "I'd rather go blind" over Beyoncé

Okay. I'll grant you that she has a big voice but so do a million others. A big voice empty of soul or emotion.
Here is the real deal. Watch this and then ask yourself if they are even close to being in the same league.

And here is Janis at her very best (in my opinion) at Monterey Pop.

No one was suggesting that Melanie is Janis , two different voices , and Janis was very young , not to mention that her voice was altered by the consumption of alcohol . But to say Melanie has no soul is silly . How many singers would even attempt this song , anyone here ? Uh , didn't think so . Kind of like comparing Stevie Ray to Jimi , a useless exercise . Besides , Cry Baby was first recorded in 1963 , JJ was just reinterpreting the song herself .

Check out Leon Bridges. Also, the Arcs. So much good music these days. But nobody
like Arthur Alexander.
