Title: San Diego back country winter ride pics
Post by: vstevens on November 29, 2015, 09:09:03 PM
Went on a fantastic ride!  Clear skies, the air was cool, and the rolling foothills of the San Diego East county was a beautiful green!  The V7 ran flawlessly, purred like a kitten.  It's taken me some time to figure out how it likes to be ridden.  I tend to 'granny' new vehicles and the Stone has been no different.  Today I just let the rpm's wind up to 6k or 7k before shifting.. Oh the sweet musicality of that exhaust note.  She loves that cool mountain air and winding roads.   So many roads to explore...

Which roads. Took a week off in September and rented a Harley and rode a bunch in San Diego County. Mountains, deserts. Was unbelievable. I want to move there...

This might be my favorite topic of all time.

This sign, roughly translated, means "Welcome to San Diego, Motorcyclist Heaven."

I've mentioned before that most guys don't have a clue about how good the riding *is* out there.  SoCal rox. Certainly one of the finest places to ride sport bikes in the world.
Oh, almost forgot.. others have decided to move there before you. The sun tax is a little pricey..

It's been a while for me, but when I was working for Rockwell Automation, we attended several trade shows in SoCal.  In 1995, I loaded my riding leathers, helmet, and boots in a duffel, jumped on a plane, did the trade show, then picked up my rental R100R Mystic from Dubbelju in San Francisco, and headed south.  PCH until I was running at shore level, then headed inland.  Loved Julian and the surrounding area. 1997 and 1999 rented R1100R from Don Picker, California Rentals.  '99 was a hoot ..... spent 3 days in December riding around Death Valley with two good friends.  Good memories, all.  Thanks for the reminder!

Blurry pics of Death Valley, since they are cut and paste from DVD screen captures.

That sign is where Highway 79 splits North from Old Highway 80, North of I-8.

Here's another sign for you, but this one is in Riverside County, which is easy access on a loop from San Diego. In case you can't read it in the picture, it says "SHARP CURVES - STEEP GRADE, NEXT 44 MILES."

The Scura likes to visit these signs... especially in "winter."

Is that the same as S2 North from Ocotillo?  If it is I need a better map!  It looks like there's one curve.

Campo road, also known as hwy 94.  Once you head past Rancho San Diego you'll see canyon carving curves and green, rock strewn hills... Green until summer, anyway.  It's a really nice ride

Ya know, as I sit here digesting a hearty winter meal after having spent 90 minutes grading the ice glaze from around our house and outbuildings; all I can manage to say in polite vernacular is 'you lucky SOB'... but I'm not jealous. Nope. Not at all. Supposed to be -6 and sunny tomorrow.

S2, aka "The Great Overland Stage Route of 1849", is basically straight, but from there you can find some fun roads into Borrego Springs and climb Montezuma Highway out of the desert. The "44 miles" sign above is on Highway 74, East of Hemet.

Best breakfast burritos in Campo (stone's throw from Mexican Border). I can't even finish a small one.

I love 33 North of Ojai - that has to be one of the best roads of all time.  This is on 95, between 33 and 5. Has to be very close to the picture with the yummy Husaberg.

S2 out of Ocotillo (heading NW). Water placed every few miles  so the border jumpers don't die of thirst.

Angeles Crest Highway (got up to 7000 feet elev) stopped at Newcomb's Ranch. My local buddy (seated 2nd picture) had the Ducati and Guzzi. My rental harley. My LA buddy together with my DC buddy (shown) swapped off on all three bikes through the forest. My first real ride on a Ducati. Felt nice, like a Guzzi, but with a decent transmission...

Here's a 320 mile loop that includes traversing the Anza Borrego Desert; I did it last winter. A lot of people don't appreciate how much the elevation (and temperature) changes in this area. This loop, for example, goes from Sea Level to over 6,000 feet. The total ascent (and descent) is about 25,000 feet - almost 5 vertical miles up and down. Of course, if you want serious elevation, the Sierra Nevada passes are available in Summer.

(http://i1128.photobucket.com/albums/m492/timscudder/San%20Diego%20Loop%20for%20V11LeMans/Screen%20Shot%202015-02-01%20at%203.14.12%20PM.png) (http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/timscudder/media/San%20Diego%20Loop%20for%20V11LeMans/Screen%20Shot%202015-02-01%20at%203.14.12%20PM.png.html)

@mtiberio: I love the desert. While it's fun to rip through on a street bike, you really need a street legal dirt bike and a few days to see Anza Borrego properly.

Another gratuitous Scura picture. This one in Ocotillo along route S2, where it can get a bit breezy sometimes...

Nice shot, I forgot the huge wind turbine farm near I-8 and S2.

I always liked going through Borrego Springs to Julian to Ramona for the SoCal rallies.

Except the last one, the 5th, when it was held in December. Can you say BRRRR!!!!!!

Rained all weekend. Then, the road was closed through Julian becouse of snow. Stayed an extra day and rode back to Phoenix on Highway 8, over Laguna Pass. Lots of snow there!

Was pretty exciting ride that day!

It is, well, I cannot say whether it is near Vail Lake or not, it is 79 heading east from Temecula.

And here is your taco stop.  Good grub indeed.  I had done the usual blast out to Campo, Honey Springs road, Lyons Valley and all that.
I love the area... Love it.

Fun dirt-biking near Pine Valley too.

I think that once you leave the dense population area that every paved through-road between I-8 and the Mexican border is fantastic (and I think I have been on every one). I mean, really, just pick one and go... endless curves... beautiful scenery... then connect it to another, even better road...

Here's a favorite minor road further North, but still in San Diego County: Mesa Grande.

Camels are where Old Julian Highway meets Highway 78.

Here are two shots from an overlook on Sunrise Highway (aka S1) at 6,000 feet elevation on Mount Laguna.

150 mile loop this morning. Desolate one-lane road... and home for breakfast.
