Hi guys,
I need a new timing cover for my engine as the previous owner installed a cover from a spineframe model when he deleted the lower frame rails. I am rebuilding the motorcycle on a stock 850T5 frame which requires a different timing cover.
The bike will have electronic tacho (motogadget classic chrono), so there is no need for a cover that has the mechanical tacho drive as the 850T5 normally has.
I would like to use a 1100cc cover as these don't have the mechanical tacho drive.
My question is, is the alternator mounting different on the models using the ducati alternator from the models using the Bosch alternator, or can I fit a bosch alternator on the cover designed for the ducati alternator?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ulrik,
There are many Tonti frame bikes that came without a mechanical tachometer.
Take my SPIII or the Le Mans IV and V for example.
Then it's a no fuss operation.

All years of the Le Mans 1000 ("Mk. IV and V") had cam driven tachometers.

convert had no cam driven tach... it had a cam driven AFT pump, much uglier than the tach drive. Just plug the tach drive. I think Guzzi made a part to do this, as some G5's which didn't have tach's had the tach timing cover, and I remember once seeing a plug to plug the hole...

My mistake :embarrassed:
Cali III has the right one. Reboot has got several SPIII and Stein Dinse has them new.

Hi Ulrik
Unfortunately I`can`t answer your question with certainty.
But I would think the stator mounting holes are the same, as the Ducati alternator for Guzzi comes with adapters that look like they have the same 3 holes as the Bosch one:
http://www.hmb-guzzi.de/shop/Elektrik--Zuendung--Beleuchtung/Lichtmaschine---Regler/Lichtmaschine--Ducati---Cali-1100--V11-etc-.html
And Stein Dinse used to sell the Ducati set as a direct swap :

But I hope others with a more empirical knowledge on this issue will chime in.
Good luck

I think you've answered your own question.
Spine frame cover never had Bosch alt but the PO fitted the pair, you have one to check if it did, plenty of others have done this too

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your answers, seems like I can't really go wrong. I just remember reading an instruction on how to machine your timing cover to accept the ducati alternator. So I figured that there must have been a difference between the two. But I have to admit that I can't remember if the alternator in question was the standard Guzzi ducati alternator.
I will find a timing cover without the mechanical tacho drive on it and report back if it works without problems.
Thanks again.

The only difference between the Bosch, Ducati and Saprissa alternator mountings is I believe the ID of the seal for the shaft but I believe they are all interchangeable with the same OD. Other than that the only difference on non-mechanical tach Tonti models is the boss for the tach not being machined.
Interestingly the V11 series use a modified Convert timing chest cover with the pump boss for the ATF pump clearly visible. One presumes they were simply recycling the dies.

Hello
I’ve just picked up on this discussion and interested that you are going back to the standard frame. I am doing the reverse and wanting to remove the bottom frame rail on my current project bike. Is the timing chest you are removing from a V11 or 1100 sport? If so I would be very interested in buying it. I am based in the UK.
I have 3 spare front timing chest covers. Two from California 3’s and one from an EV. All had an electronic tacho. Unfortunately two of them have the front mounting bolt seized and the other has some slight fin damage. If you are interested in an exchange I will see if can remove the seized bolts at work. We have an engineering shop that would do it for me.

Hi Tony,
I think the timing cover must be from one of those models or at least from one of the spineframe models. Which one I can't say for sure.
Unfortunately I just bought a new (to me) cover from Italy this morning. So I should be covered.
The reason I'm going back to the standard frame is that I don't believe that the danish MOT guys will allow me to run Mono shock and no lower frame rails. So I'm going back to standard twin shock and standard frame.
Have you chopped up your frame yet? If not, maybe you would be interested in buying mine? I will return from Indonesia next week, so I can snap some photos of the frame and timing cover in about a weeks time if you're interested.

Bike as it looked when I bought it. I have returned the swingarm to twin shock mount, so that's not available. Wasn't really made that nice anyway.

Without clothing.
If you're interested in the frame you can PM me, and we can find out about something, also we safe another guzzi frame from being cut up

Hmmm, that is one ugly exhaust.

My words exactly! That's why I have thrown it out and replaced it with a set of Lafranconi Compozitione in crome

Hello. yes I would be very interested in buying the frame if we can work out a sensible price.
Its looks like a neat fabrication job. I have a California 111 frame that is completely standard including the lower frame rails if you are if you are interested. I'll look forward to hearing from you on your return to Denmark.

I'm sure we can find a sensible price for the frame. It has dutch papers, but i guess that not a big deal in UK.
I will get back to you when I get to Denmark on Wednesday.

exhaust probably works quite well however...
