Title: Longest possible shocks for a smallblock?
Post by: Mayor_of_BBQ on December 07, 2015, 09:53:34 PM
couple questions...

1. What is the longest set of shocks that can be installed on an older smallblock before causing problems with the UJ?

2. i assume the v65 ntx had a different swingarm and shaft configuration than a standard v35/50/650? Is that correct?

I don't think the V65TT has a different swingarm, but it's been a while since I saw one. Is a NTX the same as a TT? Another thing to consider is oil level for the pinion with its nose higher in the air. I assume the mod for the pinion oiling has been done. What year smallblock ?

basically the longest are the ones fitted, you might get away with one or two cm extra but anything more will reduce the life  expectance of the UJ to several hours ( i tried)  :embarrassed:
the TT and NTX has the same swing arm as the nevada, or any of the other wire wheel small blocks

guzzi fitted a swingarm from a bigblock to the baja, those are longer and have two UJ.
on my TT i fitted a constant velocity joint , but that was quite a challenge
having said that , i ended up with a foot of suspension travel  front and rear :bike-037:(http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll70/robedoes/V50%20Mormel/ttmono_zpsiifqzmrj.jpg)

I have done the pinion lube mod

it's a 1984 V65

I'm also raising the front end..

Were longer shocks fitted to NTX-TT from the factory and if so what is that length? I think that's what everyone wants to know, so if someone has that specialized knowledge , lay it on us please.

stock TT was 350 mm , the florida had 335 mm shocks, and shares the same frame layout.
suspension travel is similar too.
The uj has to be straight when cruising, so fitting longer shocks to  jack up the rear end is not going to work

Now I understand, thanks. I spose a taller profile tire could be used ,stiffer springs too. I like your TT, Hubb. What size is the front wheel?

a taller tire could work
stiffer springs wont help much if you adjust them for the UJ to be straight.
unfortunaly there is no easy way to improve the rear suspension.
i tried different shock angles ( as you can see from the pic)
that helps a bit, but the UJ is the real problem.

my tt has a 4,5x18 rear, and 3x17 front wheel.
it looks weird on the pic, it had a flat front when the pic was taken.
