Title: 96 sport 1100... spectacular.
Post by: oldmxdog61u on December 28, 2015, 06:55:09 PM
Another ride behind me, and i love this thing. More refined than my previous lmiv, but related. The staintune exhaust note is superb, and it is smooth and very comfortable. Looking forward to some 1000 mile weekends this spring.  :thumb:

Smooth. Very smooth. Loves 4-7 k, pulls hard, and a lovely sound. Plus  5th gear is not for the feint of heart. Like the lemon, she eats up cruising all day at 85 or north (closed course only  :boozing:)
Very stable, comfortable. Heck, i love the stock bars even.

Carbs. Real, stinky ones. Those flat slide things are so..well, I don't want to say sissy.

Actually I keep thinking about those. I'd love to ride a FCR equipped Sport.

They work so much better than the stock Dellortos, it's like riding a different (better) motorcycle.

The injected ones had much lighter wheels and a more sophisticated front forks as a result once dialled in handles better. Providing you can handle the idea of sorting out the fuel injection, although straight from the factory the carbed ones ran pretty awfully too.

Guzzi knew they were sending out poopy runners to satisfy I think, "EURO III at the time - since mine came with a set of alternate jets taped to the right hand grip - from the factory. Set up nice with the alternates till the Borla exhaust got swung underneath it.

I think you'll find Euro III in the mid 90's was still a pipe dream here anyway. No alt jets from the factory to get the delorto's to vaguely run right, slinging the factory exhaust into the trees a re-jet with no Mr google to ask what sizes and of course no one actually carried alternative delorto sizes so they had to be specially ordered in.

After that it would kind of run for about 2500kms buy which time the balance of the carbs would of drifted out and you'd need to mess with them again. FCR's not only work better that also hold their balance although at the time the FCR's new ran some serious money by the time you had put the carbs on and a exhaust you were looking at about 15-20% on top of the original purchase price.

1996 model Sport 1100 bought new in March 1997.  $10490 MSRP, less the $1000 factory cash.

$9400 purchase price.

$1000 Sudco FCR41 carb kit.  (In 2002)

$1500 Staintune system.  (In 2001)

So yeah.  25% of purchase price, but darn well worth it!

Now, those two things would be more like $4000, if you could find them new.  100% of the purchase price of a stock used Sport 1100 !!!

If you sling the standard 12mm master cylinder (carbed bikes only) for a 916 Ducati one (16mm) you will get quiet an improvement. If you replace the callipers with the ones from a 999 with a 916 master cylinder you'll turn them up to 11.
Title: Re: 96 sport 1100... spectacular.

I went with Brembo GP master cylinder and cast iron full-floating rotors.  Calipers are still OEM.

Title: Re: 96 sport 1100... spectacular.
Post by: Murray on December 30, 2015, 09:25:22 AM
However you get there brand new in the box was the cheapest for a master cylinder, I managed to be in the right place at the right time to get the callipers, I decided to retire mine after 130 000odd kms and no rebuild kit available the performance upgrade was a bonus.

I have to remember to use only one finger for braking. I couldn't ask for better braking power, just wish all my bike's brakes worked as well

Talking of brakes, the last 2 bikes I have ridden excepting my own are an MV 800 Brutale and an Aprillia Falco.
My 1100 sport seems to have better brakes than these two examples. I know that on paper the MV should have much better brakes but there you go. Maybe if the MV  and the Aprillia had a good workout the brakes may improve.
Cheers and happy New Year to all.

I love my black one, but that silver does look stunning.

If you can lock the front wheel, the only difference in stopping distance will be tires, weight and weight distribution. The most modern sport bikes have a lot of weight forward and high, and lift the rear wheel easier than some older ones, so I'm not surprised if people prefer the Sport for stopping. Surely better than the V11S series. Maybe better than a modern liter bike.

Hoagie? Nah, it's for stashin' grinders, or, grindahs as it were. Frappes go in the cup holder.

One thing it's not for is using that crapy factory "race" stand. Glad I bought one with the bike and got over it to keep me from forever seeking one out later - only to be disappointed.

It's also a great place for a 2 1/4" +/- piece of hickory as a tie down and lateral stabilizer.

They work so much better than the stock Dellortos, it's like riding a different (better) motorcycle.
The Spot with stock carbs required a rider with a flexible, fully-functional wrist.  I remember that my wrist was the only unhappy part of my body or spirit on that bike.

I rode mine at a STAR school at Hallett Oklahoma when it still had the Dellortos.  My right wrist was done by the end of the day.

1/2 turn throttle required some antics to get WFO on the corner exits.

The FCRs solved that.
