Title: Is Angels Crest Highway open?
Post by: Travlr on December 31, 2015, 02:20:32 PM
I'm headed to Ventura in early January to pick up a bike.  Would like to ride it back to Arizona via Angles Crest and maybe Big Bear.

Are those roads open this time of year?

I've only been all the way to Wrightwood once. One of my most memorable rides, though.. :thumb:

No way. El Nino is supposed to hit hard this year and that means rain and mud and snow. Even in the best of times the Crest is iffy. Most of the weather comes in January. Good luck. Best bet is 101 to the 5 to 14 and then 58 to Barstow. Then you can go east missing most of the mountains.

I was there in August too, and it was definitely open.  I rode from San Diego up 15 to Cajon Junction, and then to Wrightwood via Lone Pine Canyon Rd, and then on to La Canada.

All it takes is one rain with rock/mud slides. This time of year, I'd say no.

I have ridden that road in January, sunny day, but in the shade you will hit black ice, not a good thing, there are many other great rides to AZ, but I would avoid highway 2 for sure

Thanks all!  I guess I'll have to save that one for a trip later this year.
