Title: now I've done it...or...just call me Jeff
Post by: lucydad on January 06, 2016, 12:52:18 PM
All,

Now I've done it.  Or, just call me Jeff the cyclist.

http://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine/2012/02/08

Went and bought some cycling tights.  Spandex city, black, red stripes, with butt pad and teflon coated for rain repellent.  Thermal and high technology they are, cost $113, but Ms. LD had a gift certificate.  Butt pad is really important for me as mine fell off years ago.

So, now I can go cycle in our cooler-wetter days and be comfortable.  Spandex head to toe.  Yeah, that's the ticket.  Might go this afternoon.

Be careful during the seal mating season.

No pictures...lmfao.  Ms. LD said now I need a matching cycling spandex jacket?  I was wearing one of my old beat up heavy cotton winter shirts over a pirate t-shirt.  The new tights work great though, and now perhaps I can achieve my goal of at least 3 bicycle rides/week, and burn off the 4 pounds I gained over Christmas and New Years.

Yeah, there is something about the bicycle "uniform".  Perhaps a distant cousin to the HD "uniform"?  Dunno.  Projects an image that tweaks emotions?

I just got back from a 20 mile bicycle ride in 40 degree air.  There aren't  many practical options other than tights in cold weather unless you like cloth flapping in the breeze and getting caught in the front sprocket, etc..  I go with the store brand ones that go on sale for about $25-$30 at the end of the season though.

We don't look any sillier in a bicycle outfit than we do in motorcycle gear, it's just that most of us on this board have gotten used to the silly looking motorcycle gear and think it looks normal.

Thus time of year my loose pants get tucked into my sheepskin boots. Temperatures under 25 degrees don't go well with tights. Single digits even more so.

It doesn't happen here much, but if I want to ride and it's in the low 30s or lower, I'll wear tights over chamois lined shorts and be comfortable.  It's been too many decades since I've ridden when it was below 20 for me to remember what I wore then.

Doing cycling tights over chamois shorts, & a long sleeve base layer under a jersey. Can easily remove if it warms up plus use out on the m/c. I think I'd like bibs with the suspenders (GC) better though to be rid of multiple elastics working into your waist.

Lycra is not the only option:

Please don't ride the Guzzi around wearing that stuff. We got enough brand problems,

A couple nice "non-racer" cycling books from Rivendell Bicycle Works.  I've read the first one, I like it.  Gotta get the second one.

"Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike", by Grant Peterson.

"Eat Bacon, Don't Jog: Get Strong, Get Lean, No Bullshit", by Grant Peterson.

Or buy from Amazon for a little over $11 each.  I found the first one at my local library.

And Seattle-made knickers-  https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/compass-knickers/ (https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/compass-knickers/)

Don't forget to shorten your name like Jef to save weight.

@Stevet: Riv is my local bike shop. I've got a Quickbeam (2-speed fixed) and Sam Hillborne. Wear wool, sit on leather, ride lugged steel  :boozing:. Brooks saddles rock and are no worse than Guzzi saddles for comfort. YMMV... Merino wool base layer, top and bottom, Riv MUSA knickers (bought cheap at "garage sale", GC), merino for legs and arms, and layers. On guzzi, merino under leather, other layers between depending on weather. Plenty of crossover between functional motorcycle and bicycle stuff.

Hey, I was in there one, on the V50, and there were two other Guzzis. One ridden by a big-time local bicycle guy. Who I don't personally know but no great surprise. It was practically a rally!

Bicycling is much cooler when you free yourself of the need for special clothes and shoes. Petersen makes that point but still, you don't need the hyper dollar bicycle knickers-just roll up your pants.

My longest ride with total non-cycling gear was 50 miles. I think 30 is a better limit for me before I use the special shorts-that was on a Brooks B17 equipped Brompton.

You can walk those fluffy poodles while wearing all that spandex and no one will give you a second look.

My darling will not let me go out in public with my bike gear. :embarrassed:

However, when one is grunting off road down the centre of the South Island for 106kms I can assure you that the Lycra with the chamois insert and the top made of wicking material is the only system for me!
