Title: ...variations on the full english breakfast [mostly photographs]
Post by: Daniel Kalal on January 11, 2016, 08:54:45 PM
...always a Guzzi nearby.  Any of these (except a few, perhaps) might have been the best breakfast I've ever had, but I cannot imagine doing this every day.  This might not be the best way to start riding in the morning, but I've not ever been able to resist.

Good catch.

And what's all that orange juice about?

The atmosphere may have something to do with the experience, which may be why my best memory of a Full English was in a tiny restaurant that had evidently been there forever on the main wharf on Guernsey at 6:00 a.m.

WTF - sorry but I must call you out Daniel

Lettuce and Cucumber with a full English Breakfast

a) There should be no pretence that a FEB is in anyway healthy for you
b) Its plain WRONG!!

Reminds me of my dropping into a "posh" café over here and ordering a bacon sandwich and it came with ..... a strawberry :embarassed:

Keep the photo montages coming though - always worth a look

What is it with beans for breakfast? Maybe grits or potatoes, I've even had fried rice while in Singapore but beans?

You've obviously never eaten breakfast in a US navy mess hall, Dean. Or had to live with your fellow Marines afterward.

Yep, been there done that, 4-5 Navy ships, Subic Bay for 6 months as a brig guard.

The Texans I worked with in Indonesia ate black-eyed peas with Tabasco on them for breakfast. That wasn't bad, just not for me at breakfast, to each their own. Maybe that goes back to the rationing days in England during WW II. We watch a lot of English movies they seem to like beans with just toast. ?? Maybe they didn't have anything else to eat.

I was in China maybe 30-35 yrs ago (before there was so much western influence) and while I enjoy Chinese food, I found an English breakfast at the Beijing Hotel. One of the most memorable and enjoyable breakfasts ever.

WTF...Lettuce and Cucumber with a full English Breakfast...

Good catch; I missed that one.  It happens to be from Slovakia, so of course isn't really English, but I'll keep it in the list for the quality of the bacon.

Beans on toast, one of my favourites, but what's with the coffee?

Give me a cuppa tea.

Marmite or Marmalade on toast too of course.
Sorry, that's not a full English is it  :thewife:

flattered to see a thread devoted to our national dish

as Somerset Maugham said;

“To eat well in England you should have breakfast three times a day.”

cup of tea with milk, sugar optional
cooked bacon
black pudding
sausage
baked beans
toast
tomato is optional and highly controversial

lettuce and smoked ham have no place in the true full english.

'hash browns' or potato of any variety are surely a creeping americanism...

can we have a thread devoted to kippers next?

However if you live in the UK and Retford Notts. is within striking distance PM me and I'll tell you where to get them for breakfast from a top top café  :thumb:

Reminded me of when my youngest daughter was small a long time ago, we used to get up early Sunday morning to cook ourselves an English breakfast before the rest of the Family got up  -  toast, fried eggs, beans in tomato sauce, sausages, fried potatoes, fried mushrooms ......
I still wonder how that little girl could eat so much!

I don't see an inch of grease on any of those plates.  Or is that a Welsh delicacy?

Smithfield at 4am on the way home after a night out used to be good.

It''s not a Full English unless each item on the plate is touching AT LEAST two other items BTW.

A french stick with rashets of bacon and four tried eggs in it, from the caravan outside the market after a night drinking in the hospital bar.

How did we survive or youth?

So, 'bangers and mash' is just a side dish then?

No; but, not for breakfast--and, as often as not, found in places like this:

(http://www.dankalal.net/2015trip14/photo387.JPG) (http://www.dankalal.net/2015trip14/photo388.JPG) (http://www.dankalal.net/2015trip14/photo389.JPG)

For some reason, this (and spotted dick) is the food mostly likely to make American tourists giggle like twelve year olds.
