Title: horse pucky
Post by: lucydad on January 13, 2016, 03:57:40 PM
All,

Took the hot rod Triumph out today after lunch.  Been a almost two weeks since I had a ride.  Gorgeous day:  dry, warm and sun.

Anyway I was swanning near Brazos Bend park minding my own business.  Spotted something unusual oncoming lane.  WTF?  It was a horse trotting down the road, no owner, no harness.  Slowed way down, but sheesh.  Now that is a new one.  Seen deer, loose dogs, turkeys, goats, kitties, piggies, vultures, and even a possum or raccoon or squirrel or two.  But a horse?  He seemed unperturbed, and did not notice me, break gate, nor swerve.  Beautiful horse, I hope it is ok.

Man did I need that ride.  I got my man-card back.  This whole house thingy-thing has been incredibly stressful at times on our marriage, not to mention other aspects.  We close Friday, and then it is move time, then the big upside of the 3 car garage.

Years ago, one of my brothers friends was driving his bug eyed sprite after dark and saw a horse coming just like you describe.  It was coming in his lane so he braked to a stop.  The horse galloped right over him in his sprite, caving in the
hood and hard top as it did so.  Lucky he didn't have a soft top like so many other sprite owners.  The horse suffered no damages and just galloped on as if this was something it did every day.

Years ago (Conroe, Texas) I was on the horse end....that is to say one of our Arabians got out.....ran down the street and out into a 4 lane with heavy traffic. I was in hot pursuit, and when he ran out into the 4 lane all I could do was hold my breath. All sorts of tires screeching and horns blowing, but no accidents. He promptly turned around....ran back across all 4 lanes...all the way back home, where my wife was waiting to open the gate and let him in. The closest I have come to having a heart attack!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep , running about 80 MPH traveling West on HW 62 just East of the OK border in AR . Dark night , just trying to get home after a long 3 days poring concrete in Fayettville . Highly illegal headlight on my airhead RT piecing the dark , something really large flashes in front of me , then again in reverse . Crank up the brakes , spend 10 minutes making friends with a very spooked horse , tie him up to a porch column of a nearby house , stop in next town and tell a deputy there is a stray critter roaming around about 4 miles East . One of the reasons for not riding much after dark

An odd animal in the road isn't too unusual out here in the country.  I had a horse get away from his owner and run out in the road in front of my Dodge van once, but I had room to stop.  I guess it's like anything else, don't outdrive your vision.  Here, even more common than animals in the road is coming upon a couple pickup trucks stopped, with the drivers chatting, blocking both lanes.

I came around a curve on a little back road on the Mississippi/Louisiana line and came face to face with a herd of water buffalos, seems they had escaped from a near by farm.

:1: Since most of my riding is spring through fall generally not a reason to ride at dusk to dark and later. Just much to dangerous anymore between deer and drunks.

Hey Greg,

Does your wife like to ride...maybe take her out for a ride to breathe the fresh air and see what motorcycling does to relax you and take away the stress of the move?

Weather is looking for a gaggle of geese to ride on Sunday...we're going to invade Dave's Galveston for a fun lunch.

Paul,

Ms LD distains motorcycles.  Her loss.

Still considering Sunday, depends on a lot of moving new house parts, etc.  I will let you know.

Ah...that's a pity!

No worries...totally flexible, nice 3 day weekend, so can ride pretty much at any time.  Weather is forecasted to be lovely for the weekend...Dave promises a scrumptious lunch somewhere.

Hope all works out well with the move...should be a time for celebration and little stress!
