Title: Daytona Bike Week, 2016
Post by: pyoungbl on January 18, 2016, 08:12:44 PM
I'll be at the Holiday Travel Park, as usual, from Friday (4 March) until Saturday (12 March).  We normally have a gathering at a Pizza spot one night.  The Norton folks have a catered event on Wednesday (9th)...beer and BBQ for $25.  Leafman60 will want to see some Guzzi folks at Martin's for dinner one night.  Are there any other plans in the works?  Who's going?  I'm taking the V7 with the intent of exploring lots of back roads...maybe take in a spring training baseball game somewhere.  Winter has already worn out its welcome for me!

I'm going the last weekend, staying at a friend's house about a 10 minute walk from Main St.  Might just take the Mustang Convertible instead of the Eldorado.......

Looking forward to it, haven't been in 4 years.

Judi and I will be at Camp Carlo as will a gaggle of other folks.
The Florida guys have been working on making sure we have all the campsites around the big fire ring.
This is basically a not a rally. Everyone gets their own site, or shares one. Sometimes there is dinner prepared by one of the participants with a donation box. I like to think of it as a week long pot luck.

I know that no one goes to the race anymore but you can still be disappointed to know that the "200" will remain an amatuer event (American SportBike Racing Association) with 600 cc bikes.

Moto America (former AMA) 1000 class as promised is not going to happen.

The Flat track racing Thursday and Friday night is always a good time. That is some serious racing right there. A couple of swap meets and vintage bike shows outside of town, those are fun. The vintage flat track at Volusia county speedway can be fun also but the track kinda sux as its more of a car track- a watered down banked oval. Met Dave Aldana there one year. Met Dick Klamfoth at one of the swap meets a couple years ago. Usually RTW Doug and Polly can be found at one of the swap meets also. The Pantheon Guzzi meet up is always a good time. And the Martin's restaurant meet up in Flagler beach (10 miles from my house) is a good time. Don't forget the demo rides at the speedway. Last year Guzzi and Indian had the best rides as far as time in the saddle goes. Harley has a good route that's always fun with some good saddle time. I never go downtown- its just too much for me. I thoroughly enjoy Bike Week. Seeing that many motorcycles on the road all the time all day just brings out the kid-like wonderment in me. I live about a half hour or so from the Speed way so I go every year since I moved to Florida. This will be the sixth one in a row. Not burned out yet.

I'm sick of winter.  Although Bike Week does not officially start for a few days i'm heading out in the AM.  I'll hope to see other Guzzi faithful there.  This V7 will be happy to see sunny weather, cold adult beverages, and lots of like minded motorcyclists.  OK, and maybe a few HD types.

I've been in Florida in the Sebring area for the season.  Plan on riding up to Daytona on Monday.  We are staying in the Ormond Beach area.  Never been to Bikeweek before.  Any must see/must do's?

He is doing his patriotic duty this morning at the polls and then heading south to Daytona.

I hope to join next week.

Never been to Camp Carlo. How does the reservation process work? Anywhere you can set-up your tent? Site specific? Good restrooms/ showers? Thinking about going this year and would like to tent camp with other Guzzi fans. Thanks in advance.

Camp Carlo is actually Lake Monroe County Park. Everyone rents their own site or shares with someone. Charlie Brackett has mentioned he reserved 2 spots. Mine will be full until Tuesday after which I have room for a tent. There are usually extra spaces available. Rest rooms are decent, individual shower, sink and toilet in each of about 10 rooms. Park is locked at night so you need the code to get in. Code changes weekly.

I contacted the park and all the sites are reserved. Will confirm my schedule options later this week, but if I showed up do your feel I could set my tent up somewhere among the reserved sites?

I've been several times, and *unless things have changed*, they always said it was full and there was always someplace to camp. Sometimes, a lot of places.

FWIW, some of the 'campers' use a cement tent on the other side of Lake Monroe.

I'm sure we can find some space, and like Chuck sez the government employees have to work harder, the more people are there  so they will tell you that its full.

Folks, I'm here to tell you that BW 2016 had the best weather of any of the last 20 years.  I had a great time.  Holiday rented a 40KW generator for our group and ran a 2" water line out just for all of us.  We had lots of shade and it was a very pleasant time, then noise from I95 soon became just background music.
so quiet you could hardly hear it from 5 feet away.
My Norton buddies gather together and have a great time, some of them have Guzzi's too so the Goose is welcome

Of course there is always some campground maintenance
(https://peteryoungblood.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Bike-Week-2016/i-Hctmz86/0/M/DSCF0061-M.jpg)

and libations
(https://peteryoungblood.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Bike-Week-2016/i-4VKb5qd/0/M/DSCF0049-M.jpg)
and more maintenance...this time on a brand new KLR
(https://peteryoungblood.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Bike-Week-2016/i-WJwb9Wq/0/M/DSCF0059-M.jpg)
The campground also has a breakfast cafe where lots of us gather over coffee to plan our next adventure.  If you leave a tip you get a flash:

Holiday has good clean showers, lots of porta-johns, water, and controlled access.  I highly recommend it.  Oh, camping was $16 per night for a tent.

I returned from Daytona last night about 8 PM.  We had another great time with beautiful weather, food and fellowship, Guzzi friends and others all week.

PYoung, I and others stay at the Holiday Travel Park on Old Dixie Hwy., the next exit north of Rossmeyer's H-D.

The highest natural point in Florida is only like 350 feet.

You may top that at a few land fills but basically, the state is ffffflaaattt.

I'm glad someone else noticed and appreciates that custom.  I really liked it.  It's done by the boys down at H-D in Macon GA.

They basically stripped the stock bike down and got crazy with orange paint.

I test rode the 750 Street and I had a positive reaction to the engine and the power. The switchgear and other features seemed a little cheesy to me but, it's a $7500 bike!

That café version would be easy to do.  I wonder what it weighs. The stock spec is 489 pounds wet. The café must be closer to 400 pounds. It's been dyno tested by Cycle World at 58 HP- rear wheel.

I think this may be my last year to go.  I loved all of the races they used to have, but it has turned into a giant vendor mart for the big manufacturers, and the races are kind of a side show.

I will get my racing fix 45 minutes from my home, at Virginia International Raceway.....
Title: Re: Daytona Bike Week, 2016
Post by: LowRyter on March 17, 2016, 09:52:25 AM
certainly the degradation of the races have dampened my enthusiasm to go there considering the cost and effort.

the worst part the Track (NASCAR) just doesn't seem to care.  Ten years ago AMA Superbike was just a notch below WSB and MotoGP.  In fact, Mladen was within a couple seconds of the MotoGP pole at Laguna.  Then NASCAR bought it and immediately Honda left and everyone else cut back.  Several top paid riders retired or lost rides and were out of the series.   MotoAmerica was scheduled to come back and they couldn't pull it off.  And the vintage stuff hasn't been there in years.

It's a Harley convention and all the trash a$$ociated.  If it weren't for meeting folks (and perhaps the weather) there would be no reason to go.

Hi John,
I have not been to a race at the speedway since they stopped doing vintage races.  My Norton friends had a huge party at turn 6 on the infield and we really enjoyed seeing the old iron on the track.  That's gone now so I don't go to any of the speedway stuff.  For me the attraction of Bike Week is (1) get away from winter...even a mild one, (2) see old friends and enjoy their company again, (3) check out the few vendors who carry stuff I am interested in.  This year I got to talk to a rep from Ohlins as well as one from Progressive Suspension.  They explained some of the finer points of how shocks are built....informatio n I had not been able to gather anywhere else.  This will come in handy when I'm sorting out the suspension of my new bike.
We (my Norton buddies and I) have a bunch of restaurants that we like to go to, usually combined with a nice ride through the country.  It's really hard to fit them all in.  These do not include the bars on Main Street, Destination Daytona, or the Iron Horse.  Throw in some interesting swap meets, the dirt track races, and some random neat bikes....I'll go back next year.

Is the auction at Stetson still going on?

Unfortunately - no.

None of the good old days of Vintage Things remain.  No Vintage Races, no Vintage Show, no Vintage Auction.

But there are many neat things to do- even if you are not into H-D's or Indians.

We had a good gathering of Guzzi people at Holiday.  This COULD be an annual Guzzi event if enough interest could be harvested!

By the way, one of the many things some of us regularly do at Bike Week is visit the HUGE Flea Market and Farmers Market at the southwest corner of I95 and 92 (Intl Speedway).

The place is huuuuuuuge. Everything is there. Antiques, jewelry, electronics, clothing, tee shirts etc, auto parts and services, vegetables, fruits, you name and it's there.

A few pics of the fresh veggie and fruit section.  They give taste samples of everything they sell too-
