Hope all are fairing well.  Bundle up and slow your driving speeds down.

Yea, it's been pretty bad here too.  Hasn't been above 80 in over a week where I live.
And nights have been way down in the mid sixties.
On top of that today is rain.

They are predicting more than 2 inches may fall over Saturday night in southern CT
I'm going to fill my snowblower and generator.
It could get annoying

We've basically not seen winter yet, outside some occasionally cold temps.

But we're bracing for this (hit both the grocery and liquor stores today).

They're calling for 12-18" around here, though it could be better or worse.

Thing is, Jenn's on call all weekend. She's gotta get to and fro the hospital for rounds each morning and could get called back anytime for 48 hours.

So we're gonna make sure both the Jeeps are tip-top and ready.

We get our snow in April.  My prediction is a load.

SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 16 TO 24 INCHES... WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS ALONG THE BLUE RIDGE NORTH OF ROANOKE.

Snow is nothing new in the area. We had three feet of it in the yard up in Hot Springs when we lived there.

Our Blizzard just passed. Lake Erie is not frozen and likely will not freeze this year. Plenty of lake effect snow. We easily had over a foot Sunday/Monday, and into Tuesday. Winter tires on a Subaru is a wonderful thing right now.

For the folks further South, I feel for you guys. Since your road crews are usually not equipped to handle what is being predicted, I would imagine it will be tough for a few days if the predictions come true. It is a big news topic here right now. Take care.

Yo, John, you may have to move down here to the sunny south ...  well, no sun actually. (Hudson/Twinsburg area) and get out of that nasty lake effect stuff!  Only a couple inches of snow on the ground, and the roads have been cleared.

Storm of the century predicted for here in Memphis.  Local news is in total weathergasm.  Expect to "wake up to several inches this morning."  Meh, a light dusting and wet roads.  Didn't keep this from happening at the local SuperLo.

One thing I miss about Roanoke VA is the winter.  The older I get the more I like cold weather.

When I was a kid living back east we had ice storms, cars frozen shut and no way to drive into town before snow plows made it around.

They called a snow day for school so it was a great day, got the Scorpion minibike out and slid around having a blast. Mom always had something hot to eat and everyone played a game in the evening.

Nowadays it becomes a national disaster, people rush the stores to empty shelves and what used to be inconvenience has become a call for every talking head to put anguish on their face and every elected official to mobilize entire forces to tell you what to do, how and when to do it.

How far we haven't come.

As of 10:30, we've got between 18 and 24 inches here near Hershey, PA.    It's hard to tell with the drifts.

We had 10 inches of rain on Dec 21st , but as Stormtruck told me recently , you don't need to shovel rain  You folks in the path of this storm stay home and safe .

About 14" or so, so far.

Shoveled for the first time in nearly a decade (first time in my 40's). Wouldn't have but Jenn needs to be sure she can get out if called in and they're still calling for another 10"+.

Unit wasn't too busy so the overnight and day shift said not to come in this morning, but she could still be called in at any time.

She'll definitely have to go in tomorrow morning too, so gotta be ready.

At least Fi helped shovel (well, she thought she was helping lol).

Closing in on 20 inches here in central MD. Had some thunder snow at 6am which was neat. Digging out the heat pumps just now was not so neat.

When I lived in the mountains, as a hermit,  I would get snowed in and just not go anywhere for a week or two or three,  Fresh snow meant no water shortage as I would just put a pot of snow on the stove that heated my domicile and that was water.

Closing in on 18 inches here in Philly and it's still coming down. This time last week I was tooling around on the V7 in 54 degrees and didn't even have to plug my gloves in. Crazy weather.

I just hope she's not called in sometime tonight.

But I snuck out in the Wrangler this afternoon and had no troubles (even where it wasn't plowed ) so I suspect she'll be fine in the Grand Cherokee tomorrow.

The "Garage-in-a-Box" that I keep my equipment in and sometimes a bike or two, couldn't take the strain of 24+ inches of snow and collapsed around noon. The good: no customer bikes are inside, the bad: my XT500 and pushmowers are.

How does one shovel or plow a gravel driveway?
Title: Re: Blizzard

How does one shovel or plow a gravel driveway?

Well, the plowed reference was about the neighborhood, but:

Shovel is easy, don't bother trying to get all the way down to the stones. They're pretty level so that's easy.

Our neighbor has a snow blower that he added some wooden skis to the front to keep it an inch or so over the gravel.

Basically you can do the same with a plow or just have the plow operator set it an inch or so up from contact.

Nice thing about gravel is that it's an irregular enough surface  (even when level) that even under snow or ice it gives some decent traction.

And between the two Jeeps we really don't need it clear. Anything under 10-15" is fine.

But in the long run we'll probably have it paved and find someone to plow in these circumstances.

I lived in New England for years so I've had considerable experience driving in the snow. Much less snow here in Santa Fe, and one of the biggest problems during a snow event is the other drivers. Some barrel along at or above the speed limit even with snow and ice completely covering the road surface. Others creep along with their flashers on (like other drivers can't see your car). It's downright scary.

I generally hunker down and stay off the roads.

30+ inches & still snowing for a bit longer in central Maryland.  The wall the snowplow leaves across my driveway is closer to 48".  MD has more snow than Santa Fe, but we still have more than our share of idiots on the road who don't know nearly as much about driving in snow/ice as they think they do (they aren't much better on clear roads on sunny days, now that I think about it) & I saw on local newscasts that we have a new situation of people, mostly supposedly "adults," out playing in the middle of streets that huge snowplows are still actively trying to clear off - leading to some impromptu games of chicken between big dumptrucks with big blades on the front vs. stupid pedestrians - so far no reports of fatalities, but it is probably only a matter of time.  The Darwin Principle in action...

Only a couple more inches of snow last night and no real bad winds so can't complain. Jenn had no problem getting to the hospital this morning.

Follow up pic this morning. Kinda pretty.

Very Pretty KevM. We had 36 deg C here yesterday , We are right on the Central coast of Queensland and the humidity makes it feel hotter. I've only seen snow a couple of times , I don't think I could live with it long term, I'd be whining about the cold too  :thumb:

Fortunately, I have the right tools to deal with a snow like this.    Several of my neighbors were very grateful for a visit from the Kubota with the 60" woods blower on the back.     Two or three passes up each driveway, and done.

Luckily we rarely live with it for more than a few weeks each winter, though the cold lasts a few months generally.

I can't complain, heated leather seats in the cages take the chill off just fine.
