Title: Smoking 1000S
Post by: Goffy1000S on January 26, 2016, 10:03:40 AM
New to Guzzis, I've recently bought a 1994 1000S. It smokes like hell when started from cold but clears up after a few yards. Looks like it has been standing for years but was running OK when I bought it.
Rings?

somethings off...never seen a Guzzi smoking in 15 years...square head design usually needs the top end refreshed more often then the roundheads

I would think that it needs a valve job. How many miles on the engine?

Smoking that clears away usually means poor valve guide seals but Guzzi has them not. Easy to inspect and measure once the heads are apart.  Boxer and K series Beemers and older Wings do it if left on the side stand when oil seeps past the rings. If you are handy with tools, neither option is difficult to fix.

Is the smoke black or blue, and is choke on or off?

My cx100 did that, I changed the valve guides, honed the jugs and re-ringed. No more smoke.

Blue smoke on startup is normally valve guides.
