Title: Rear Tire preference
Post by: giusto on January 27, 2016, 07:39:33 PM
Everyone has a favorite brand of tire right?

This spring I'll be replacing the rear tire on my 2001 V11 Jackal. I live in Northern Michigan and frequent gravel and dirt roads while %75 of my riding on pavement.

Recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

Interesting , as an owner of the same model , the best handling tires I have experienced so far were Avon Roadriders , although 712 Shinkoes work really well also , and are cheap . Hmm , with the gravel road thing , maybe a tire designed to deal with that might be appropriate .

Due to my riding style I have found a Bridgestone BT45 to be my preference. I've rode on some pretty remote roads and it was fine, but I'm sure there would be a better choice for those roads but to sacrifice the other 75% of the time on pavement I can't see the trade off worthwhile.

I also recommend the Tourance to you based on your riding preferences. Great performance and life.

I just put on a set of Michelin Activs on my Vintage. Great stick, a neutral profile, and a reputation for longer than average life (reputedly 8k for the rear). The price is reasonable, too...at least compared to Metzlers and Avons.

Wonderful tire.  I loved it on my California.

But, would you use it if you were running 75% gravel / 25% pavement ???

No, but giusto said 75% pavement and this is my driveway:

Ooopps.  I read it as 75% gravel.     :boozing:

Still, if I was travelling as much as 25% gravel roads, I think I'd go with the Tourance.

I used a couple of them on my Quota and they were great all-around tires.

Giusto,
I have found that the Metzler and the BT 45 are the best for gravel, wood chips, cinder and as well as any other road surface. I prefer the BT 45 because I get more mileage on both front and rear wheels. I have tested both tires though back roads, logging road, Farm to Market roads, no roads, dirt path, ect. Both tires are exceptional in all types of conditions for highway riding.

The Metzler Lasertec does not do well on gravel.
