Flying in to Budapest this coming May. Have 9 nights before we board river cruise in Vienna. Nothing booked except cruise yet. Thinking about a few nights in Budapest then travel to Prague then Vienna. Have some time to do some non- city type trips, but not sure what would be the best.
Cruise ends in Basel Switzerland where some German friends will be picking us up. Will spend a week with them, then back to Budapest to fly home.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

The three citys are all worth time spend. If you do more you spend more time traveling then seeing things. You do that trip by car, if you do and take nice roads you can see the country and mountains too.

Good advice Paul
Budapest, Prague and Vienna is already a tight schedule, if you prepare for these cities you will discover a lot.
Don't hurry via Paris to Berlin, including a quick photo at Schloss Neuschwanstein
Have a nice trip!

Piber, Austria. Home of the Royal Lipizzan Stallions. Beautiful countryside and unbelievable horses.
If you like hiking and are still somewhat agile and not afraid of heights, hike the ladders of the Barenschutzklamm Gorge near Graz, Austria
Lake Balaton area of Hungary

Budapest/Prague...
Learn to identify the Roma/Gypsy chicks and their nearby hovering muscle.
Run down to Plzeň and hit the city owned brewery ads the birth place of Pilsners.
Hit the CZ factory store in Prague.
Take time for both sides of the river for Buda and Pest.
Use the train between Prague and Budapest if at all possible - damn fine time!
Todd.

Take Paul's advice...it sounds like you know where you want to go...the more you try to see... the less you will. Stay put in the big cities if you like big cities. That said... I like smaller cites...Salzburg (best beer on the planet..Steiner Brau and Augustine's) Bolzano, Interlaken.
Most of the high mountain fun will be on skis...hiking not really probable until late June unless you stay in the valleys.
My personal favorite in that part of the world Sud Tyrol...old Austria...Now Italy
You know you won't be that far from Mandelllo and the Guzzi Factory lol Como is one of the most beautiful cites on earth!

This is kind of the starting point. Figuring we'll get Eurail passes. We do spend 2 days in Vienna once we're on the boat, so would like to add perhaps 1 or 2 other stops. I can only take big cities for a while before needing a dose of country life. Think Salzberg may be a consideration. Beer is Good! May do a train ride down towards Innsbruck if we can spend the time.
I'm studying some of the suggestionsso far.THANKS.
ps we did Mandello last trip.
Anyone know if Tim Rawson is still in Vienna? He had a Breva he toured the US with. Forgot his username.

We will be on a cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in August. We have accommodation for four nights in Budapest before finding our way back to Amsterdam to fly out from Schiphol.
We too are on the lookout for what is good in Budapest. Still working out how we will get back to Amsterdam. at this stage it may be train via Hamburg, or whatever. :undecided:

Looks like a fun trip. We are looking at a European River Cruise in late September or early October. What cruise line did you book with?

I would go to the opera every night in Vienna, standing room is only about 10 euro.

Very good suggestion, and you might be lucky enough to see Anna Netrebko...but I think you have to stand in line for a good part of the day to get these 10 Euro spots.
Prague is certainly a mystical city to enjoy for several days, rub the foot of the statue while crossing the Charles bridge...you'll know what that means when you get there. Walk the streets at night and you'll get the Mission Impossible "feeling"... :)
Vienna/Austria - if you get a chance, visit the Belvedere or Schonbrunn and the Gloriette up the hill for a wonderful coffee. There are no ends to activities in Vienna, the Prater, UN City and many places outside the 1st District (Bezirk). If you have time to explore out of Vienna, the town of Klagenfurt is a jewel to spend a couple of days on the piers on the Worther See...water so pure you can drink it while swimming.
Budapest - some of the best fruit I have ever tasted in all of Europe...enjoy magnificent food and walking sites...Hero's square, the subway itself is an adventure.
Green with envy...have enjoyed these cities many times, and they are always a delight to visit! Enjoy the trip!!

Standing room is easy in Munich, guessing Vienna is similar since there is a show 6 nights a week. Munich has small triangular supports for your arse that fold out from the wall. Still, Rosenkavalier was long...

Good point...might be easier for the regular shows as opposed to the Super Star shows when Netrebko or Ana Martinez/Placido are presenting. Either way, an evening at the Staats Oper is wonderful. Although it's somewhat kitsch, enjoying a coffee and cake at the Hotel Sacher is also an enjoyable tradition. And remember, if you haven't been ignored by a Viennese professional waiter, you haven't truly experienced the Old World charm!

There are a few good performers indeed...surprising ly! Rusalka in 2 weeks with Ana Maria Martinez...world's best soprano, based here in Houston
Saw Anna Netrebko in Guadalajara - spectacular... Others are entertaining...if you don't fall asleep!

Sorry, but opera is not my thing. Tried it, really. Had season tix here for a while and just don't get it. My dad took me to see Beverly Sills way back when. Didn't get it then either. Guess I'm a rock and roller at heart. Friends that will be picking me up at the end of the cruise, manage Swiss rock bands (Krokus, Helloween, Gotthard). May go to a concert with them. Their son, who I call Mini Me, is a guitar shredder himself. He and I shared Bone Marrow 11 years ago. He's doing great and is tall dark and handsome, just like me
Cruise line is UniWorld.

Once a year Opera is all I can take usually...more than that and it is tedious...but if you have a very good performer it can be entertaining at least. Looks like you'll have a great trip...really hard to not in that part of Europe!
Pity the Wacken Festival is not going on at the same time! Had some Guzzi friends who went to that...total Mudfest with Metal Rock...they had a blast!

Ana Maria is beautiful to boot!

She is indeed...very sweet person. Also happens to be engaged to a friend of mine here in town, so it makes it even more fun to go and see some of her shows.
