I went to look at my tachometer today, It doesn't work. I was gonna see if there was a ground in there, or where, So I unscrewed the little cup off the back, and the rubber extensions came out with the cup, which means the little nuts that hold the extensions fell down inside the tachometer! I think I heard them drop! Ugh! I'm guessing the whole thing has to come apart now!
But the electrical connector for the tach itself has a small burn mark, might that signify anything?
Lastly, are the round rubber plugs with yellow and black wires for the lamps? Those darn things don't want to pull out! Do I really pull them out or do they have a connector inside the instrument cluster. (Update: I found the answer here on this forum -they pull out hard)
Should I just shell out $250 for a new tachometer, knowing they are unreliable and this one may be toast. I have a good white face one from a 2001, but I've read here the are different.

Well now, that simply flies in the face of one of the dictums of Guzzi ownership.
We never "simply shell out..."
You haven't even begun to mention tape, JB Weld or even a hose clamp!
Nah, I say try a clean-up on the scorching first and then get on to replacement. I should think though, that the current going through that should be so low as to present no marking.
but what do I know, I thought "crabbing" was de-lousing.

The Speedhut gauges are very affordable. I received mine last month, but it's been too cold to spend an afternoon in the garage to install them.

I saw the thread on speed hut, but they say they are not water resistant. How'd they hold up in rain?
I also saw a small water line inside the plastic cup on my Goose. I'm thinking of drilling a small pin hole in the bottom so water does not accumulate.
Im guessing, if I just wanted to fill the tachometer space, I could drill a small hole in the side of the case for a small points wrench or hemostat to fit in, hold the nut, and screw the extensions back in, or rig up a small self taping screw on a rubber mount in place of the threaded one.

They will seal them with silicone. A few members have been using them for a couple years now, and I haven't heard of any issues yet.

you can get a small tach on ebay for around $15-20--they work on all 4 cycle engines--put one on a bonnie---rite up the red suspenders alley :boozing:
