Title: Just Got Paid to Ride!
Post by: JeffOlson on February 23, 2016, 12:25:05 PM
Sort of...

Yesterday, I had to travel to Eugene and back for work. As it was a beautiful day, I decided to ride my Norge rather than drive. Afterwards, it occurred to me that, since I was paid for my travel time, I got paid to ride!

How awesome is that? :thumb:

Always a nice moment when that happens.

Back in the early eighties I looked into becoming a motor officer for the CHP with that same motivation. It didn't work out, which is probably for the best.

People asked me why I wanted to go into law enforcement. I told them I just wanted to get paid to ride.

I have a friend who's a sales rep.  For some reason he won't ride one of his motorcycles to visit customers, but takes his car instead.  I can't understand that.  He could log thousands of miles per year around the southeast US, all deductible as vehicle expenses, but doesn't.

I can see wanting to keep the mc out of your work world. If you ride it all the time for work it can become associated with work and perhaps lose the fun aspect of riding.

^ I need to be careful about when I allow my Norge and my clients to meet. Certain clients expect a certain image.

Yesterday's clients are quite "rustic," shall we say; they thought nothing negative about me riding to the courthouse, stripping off my gear in the street, and putting on my suit coat. Other clients are not so open-minded and would rather see a suit arrive in a BMW automobile.

I tried that for awhile when working as a service tech traveling 5 states. Didn't work out well meeting deadlines with weather related issues. It was a bummer having to ride in the rain to get somewhere on time. Or late at night in big fat Iowa corn fed deer country. Much nicer laid back in the accord with the tunes on.

I've ridden my bike for business and got paid for it a few times. Felt like a whore afterwards. (they get paid to have fun)

Well, they get paid to pretend they're having fun, anyway.

Some of you may know "Iron-Butt Allen".  He owns a small company and travels all around the US for his clients, at least almost always by motorcycle.  It's nothing for him to get called to a customer, jump on his old Suzuki Water Buffalo, and ride 1,500 miles each way for the business trip.

I spent a year or so riding for a living -as a London dispatch rider. And I did some of it on a Le Mans III! And to start with it was brilliant - fun and not badly paid.

But I was glad to pack it in. I got to the point where I didn't want to ride at weekends. And I started wondering in the mornings "Is today the day that I die?"

So I stopped doing that.

Only thing better is getting paid while you ride, plus being reimbursed for mileage. I did that more than a few times.

I agree: too much riding for work could make one not want to ride for pleasure.

Unfortunately, given my hectic schedule, sometimes the only riding I can squeeze in is work-related (commuting to and from my office, mostly). At this stage, it is still enjoyable, but I could see myself saying some day, "Bah! I'd rather sit in an air-conditioned car, sipping a cold drink and listening to satellite radio, than put my foot down 40 times on I-5 trying to get home."

Absolutely understand the reality of this.It is ironic that the "rustic" is seemingly more sophisticated in his(or hers) acceptance of "difference" and yet the apparently more educated cannot allow him/herself the same view. I am in the UK and Motorcyclists are commonly described as Bikers regardless of what they are riding or wearing because it is ingrained that it is a lower class activity / mode of transport despite the fact that this no longer applies. Things may be a little better as its been some time since I was asked to remove my bike jacket in a pub( I removed myself from the premises after a quiet word with that particular arse..) I have travelled a little on the Continent and just not felt the same attitude even when checking into decent Hotels late at night after a long day riding and always had a positive welcome so I don't think its me giving off the wrong vibes.I think that the media just perpetuates the stereotype as portrayed in film because it suits there own agenda .

^ Yes, I did.

Stereotypes are indeed strange. When I first began riding a motorcycle back in the 1980s, I was not too concerned about safety gear and would often ride to work in the summer time in my business suit and tie, with dress shoes! As soon as I dismounted, I was ready for the office.
