If you happen to buy one of those models and are lost for a way to explain why they are named the way they are, you can always try this:
The Flying Fortress pays homage to the B52s. No, not the jet bomber, the band, the B52s.
The Roamer comes from one of the songs they created, "ROAM".
It all fits unless you're talking to the old fogey with the stogey in which case it doesn't matter, both bikes and the group made after the year 1 and therefore should not exist.

You never know.

Actually the B-17 is the Flying Fortress. B-29 Super Fortress, B-52 Strato Fortress.
Just sayin'

Never mind, the band, I got it.

Maybe I should have added some context, read any MG manuals? Lost in translation but maybe they got a little confused but someone at MG attended the concert in Dortmund.
:boozing:

I saw the B-52's a couple of times at CBGB's in the late 70's and they were way more entertaining than that bike.

B-17, mid 1930's design - propellers

Moto Guzzi, 2015 design, bears no resemblance to either a B-17, B-52 or any other aircraft, stupid name, ugly bike

I disagree. It's not really my cup, but for the segment it's competing in, I think it looks pretty cool.
So it doesn't look much like a late 30s bomber, who the he'll cares? How many potential buyers do you think are going to say, " cool name, but it looks nothing like a B 17 , so I'm not going to buy one?
It's 2016 fellas, not 1958!
-
Ummmm.... Stealth Fighter should be the name with the fairing hard angles. Maybe push it a bit to Bomber if your looking at the bike only without fairing. But defenetly Stealth in the name!

Are you sure it's not the Savoia-Marchetti SM.79? There is some resemblance.

I mean just look at those scallops! Reminds me of a JU52!

Closely modeled on the Junkers, right down to the skin corrugations. You have a sharp eye.

The B-52s in a traffic jam in Atlanta are more entertaining than that bike.
Hell, a Douglas B-7 or Boeing B-9 at half the lineage is twice as interesting as that *yak*... B-17 bike. So to is a Yak for that matter!
Flying Fortress? Rolling Buttress maybe...

Since the drift is to Ba ba ba ba bombers:

Now that could have been a better name, the Hustler. A double entendre if you want. Either you got hustled when you bought it or are doing it after you bought it.
Maybe similar qualities like hard to handle, fast, unforgiving but when it goes by your eyes get sucked out of your head, one way or another.
-
I had a ride (flight?) in a Flying Fortress-does that count?
-
The Savoya marchetti was a fabric - covered steel frame plane, the Junkers was a direct descendant of the first all-metal passenger plane, the F13. Hence apart from the three engine-configuration there was no resemblance at all. Furthermore the italian plane is ugly, the Junkers has nice proportions. In this regard it resembles the Piper Cub (how can such a primitive thing look so good?).

A B-17 crashed in a field near my house and knocked grandad off the loo in 1944 . Does that count?

Who cares what they're named. Either you like the bikes or you don't.
-
I like. But the price puts it in competition with a ElectraGlide Classic. And ElectraGlide's have a 200+ mile range while the Guzzi 1400s do not.

I'm starting to think I should buy one of these just to piss of the faithful (and I don't mean the followers of the bar and shield).

This.
So much talk around here about names, when you could just throw your leg over the damn thing and ride, seeing as how that's what they're meant for...
-
ugly fairing on what is basically a very nice machine. they managed to really screw up the look by trying to appeal to the badass types who watch Sons of Anarchy.
The name goes well with the design in that it is pandering.
The Junkers 52 goes all the way back to 1916 when they released the J1- the first production all metal plane. It had a corrugated aluminum skin just like the Ju52. The plane was used for ground attack and, for the day, was considered very rugged (if terribly slow).

How about veering slightly from bombers into maritime patrol and give it the Nimrod handle?

Well, for one, me, I care as a potential consumer. I couldn't get that pandering: California Vintage offa my bike fast enough. If names didn't matter, nothing would be named and I wouldn't care to be the owner of a "Flying Fortress", "Fat Boy" or a "Nova" were I living in Mexico for that matter.

You could fly out and join us for the NJ Campout.
Of course, as we noted at the last NJ breakfast, maybe we need to form an "all brands" club since in typical fashion there was
1 Triumph
1 Harley
1 Honda
1 Norge
2 Ambos
and that's only because another 2-3 BMWs didn't show up.
So the problem I see is that the Roamer/Bobber wouldn't piss off anyone at that gathering. <shrugs>

Jonathan, the plane you are showing here is not a J1. Look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J_1 . It was a J.1 (watch the dot, the plane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J.I). The J1 (without dot) is the starting point you are thinking of, the plane that then generated F13, W33, W34, Ju 52 and the lot. And the J1 was fast for its time.
Regarding the bike: I don`t like it. But if it creates interest for the marque in a time people like big, weird, slow lumps of metal...

pandering to what ?
Emotion, nostalgia, teary eyed - maudlin rear-view of days gone by. Simple California made perfect sense to me.
Lineage is cool but plucking nostalgic heart strings like with "Vintage" or capitalizing off of something one has absolutely no right to as with MG and "Flying Fortress" always leaves me cold for its lack of substance.
And, as one who has bought and removed the goofy moniker and as one unlikely to spend future money on a glad-handily named bike, I'm right... from right here! :boozing:
Others wanna buy it because they like it, out of spite (that's funny - I'll show you by spending $14,000+ to make a point) or a sincere desire to pay homage to B-17s or their crews... have at it.
Todd.

That looks like a modified Vulcan bomber. Is that where the design came from?
-
I've never made a buying decision based on the "name" of a bike, or car for that matter. I buy the vehicle because I like and want it. I had a California Vintage, and that's one of the more aptly named Guzzis. So I'll say it again, who gives a flying.....fortress .
