Hey Pete and Guzzisteve , or any of you other Guzzi Gurus . The Black Jackal is going to turn over
132K miles , any such thing as a 132K mile service ? Maybe I should just junk the old thing, it has to ready to blow up , or possibly just turn to dust  Hell , according to the PO , Roper laid hands on it at the National in Malibu some 90K miles ago , guess Pete put the good ju ju on it . Sigh , guess I should at least check the valves , maybe one of the exhausts will be a half a thou out . Seriously , Guzzi ownership is kinda boring  May have to buy a Honda just to have something to work on

Daniel Kalal would probably call 132K just broke in. If it is doing fine give it all new fluids and plugs, and BTW if you have not yet done it, do something about that Duct tape seat cover.

Probably the best thing you can do for the old beast is grab the right handgrip and twist :thumb:

I think the big issue is simply to keep the odometer spinning. Congratulations.

SO you like wrenchen huh! Buy yourself a CONVERT youll be happy :thumb:

Next valve adjust, pull the rocker pins and try to feel if the valves are loose in the guides. Exhaust in particular.
Just takes a few minutes.
Unscientific test, but if they feel tight, keep rolling the miles.

high-mile metal fatigue failures on my Cal2 that might be applicable for you:
side stand bracket (cracked under repeated loads)
right-rear shock attachment bolt (bolt sheared at drive housing so only left shock supported the bike)
horn brackets (cracked and failed leaving horn hanging by wires)
nose-piece of starter (fractured and dropped into bell-housing)
of course, none of this should be a worry until beyond 200,000 miles...

So Deke , I should have another 68K miles before starting to worry , heck , about 5 years , possibly more , maybe the Cubbies will win a World Series before the old thing gives up

Cam chain and K-lines and then do it all again.

That's what I'm thinking . Damn , it's hard to learn about a motorbike that won't break

It WAS Pete waving his rubber chicken over it at the Malibu National!!
That and using a hose clamp on the oil filter....
Jeff

Rubber chooks have most excellent ju ju.. :thumb:

Now if there was just an easy fix for that guy on the seat

My Sport Carb has just clocked over 90K and is 22 years old now.
I've been swapping the sparkplugs from left to right to balance the wear on the centre electrodes because it only has a sidestand. Is it safe to stop this now? And when should I replace them?
I've also been rotating the two batteries from front to rear every 5000k. This keeps the gearbox drain plug magnetised, and stops electrolysis in the clutch cable from eroding the nipples.

^^^^^ Sounds like you pretty much have it covered..
-
What Greenman , you aren't running the bike backwards every so often to balance out the flow of air ??????? C'mon man

well, down under. just as the water in the toilet spirals the other way, so does the air through the filter. So we also have to rotate the airfilters to even up the wear. Doubles the life of them don't cha no?

   Well of course . I've heard rumors that reversing direction on the oil pump doubles oil life also .

I think u people is all crazy--- :boozing:

That will also reverse flush the oil filter so it's like new again! Can't believe everyone doesn't know about all these valuable tips. No wonder their Guzzis have trouble....

Sorry Dusty, I just got in. Been playing w/Cali 2 points & plate today.
Well do a 20K service & a 50K service then take it all apart and measure everything in case you missed something. I would be checking all the splines in the drive train. And those notched rockers. If you're changing timing chain, check play on cam, and look at oil pump.
The list goes on forever.
DO NOTHING till something breaks = best advice

Really good advice from Guzzisteve. As I've said many times, "If you look for trouble on an old machine, you *will* find it." Will it keep on going for a really long time? Yep, most likely.

So all along I've been thinking like a pro ...

I'd take it out for a brisk ride and make toast to it with a nice Italian Chianti.
-
The handgrips on the '98 EV were down to the medal at 135K. JU felt sorry for me at the Minn rally and gave me a new pair. The valeo starter gave up at 140K. Hotties at the bikini bike wash refuse to touch your ride. MPH in Houston will kidnap your Guzzi and take it to the car wash
The Texas tradition is your friends buy a keg of beer when it turns 200K. (But we've been known to buy a keg earlier.}
Enjoy,
Tex

So Ken old buddy , does this mean we can expect a keg at Cedar Vale ? :boozing: What does a keg of Pilsner Urquell cost these days

How about some Texas Pride or Falstaff? I think it is still $19.95 a keg. I'll tell Lush to look in the back, very back of the storeroom and see if there is some to export to Kansas. Nothing but the finest swill for my friends!
