I'm starting a restoration on a 850 Le Mans mk 2. The bike sits with the rear too low or front too high, the forks are level with the top yoke, but I think the rear units are too short from the previous owner. Most of the side on shots of the 850 show a hint of this feature but mine looks exaggerated, I enquired and the respondent said 12 3/4" is about right for the length of the rear units, this might be the second time I have to face that mine is too short, any thoughts ?

Yes. Download a copy of the workshop manual and look up the specs on the shock absorber and every other component part.
Are you restoring this machine or building to standards established by total strangers?

Yeah I have a manual and couldn't find the standard length of the rear unit. I'm not trusting that the previous guy had it sorted correctly, I'll be in London soon with my Norge and I'll measure the units on a few at Corsa Italiana, there's heaps there and get my data from that. Also I can measure the distance from the top of the top yoke to the axle centre.

For fun I googled "850 LeMans 2 workshop manual". The first hit was ThisOldTractor.com, Greg Bender's well known Guzzi resource. Once at Greg's site, two or three clicks later, I was perusing the official Guzzi manual, and seconds later, viewing the factory drawing of the rear shock, complete with full dimensions, including the eye to eye length. Total time, about 1 minute. How long is the drive to London?

Ok....that's embarrassing. Um thanks mate, I would have taken forever to do the same thing but I'm lousy at computers. Any danger of telling me the dimension you found out ? And BTW the drive to London takes ages in a car, I live in Australia and I'd probably get water in the electrics. I'll be there again with the Guzzi for another trip to Nordkapp then down to Sicily via Romania (Transfargarasan).

As you can see,- measure eye to eye (Augenmitte-Augenmitte) = ca. 324mm

My LM2 has Konis fitted; 325mm between centres.
With fork stanchion tops (not caps) set flush with the top yoke and correct size tyres fitted,
the rear tyre only just clears the ground on the centre stand.
