Happened to me on Friday when I left it running while I was doing other things. Came back to use it and it had loaded it's self. I'm reading on other forums I'm not the only one this happened to this weekend. Only problem I'm having is a "scripting error" window keeps opening. I've turned it off in tools but it still comes on.
-
Not yet and I hope it doesn't. I have one computer on 10 and one still on 7 and plan on staying that way!
-
Ou can undoit.
Right click my computer and select properties. Then select review updates. Then select review installed updates. Then select the update number IIRC 3035583. Select uninstall and wait. When done restart and then go to Start and select Windows Update. Then search for updates. When it shows the available updates select important updates and then right click the aforementioned update. Then select hide update and then ok. It shouldn't come back.
-
same thing happened to my wife's HP.
so far my Lenovo is ok.
-
Right Two Checks you can undo it but you shouldn't have to. It should be a personal choice and not forced on you. Just my 2 cents.

Window Updates is turned "OFF". :boozing:

Window Updates is turned "OFF". :boozing:
Does that mean you cannot un-instal it?
-
Good to know it just wasn't me. I just watched my screen start doing the update without any input from me. So far I don't see anything that causes me any issues with 10 though.
-
Not forced as I chose to upgrade and then bought a new laptop with W10 preinstalled.
Actually I like it but I am getting 'script errors' with internet explorer...
-

Read the entire thread.

Not me, because I went Apple.
-
It happened to me a few days ago. Rise of The Machines. Not too happy.
-
10 is ok but Explorer isn't supposed to be on there, rather their new browser "Edge" which I disliked and replaced with Chrome.
I moved my work XP over to Linux Mint-whew!
-
When my computer is on but I'm not using it I put it on 'sleep' and so far it hasn't been corrupted.

Window Updates is turned "OFF". :boozing:
I've had Windows Update turned off since Jan 2013. Hopefully that will take care of the potential problem. :boozing:

If you have Windows Home (7 or 8), the Windows 10 version that gets installed has substantially less user control over the update functions, and is a bit hard to locate. It can be found and installed updates can be rolled back (in this and most other cases). Rolling back the whole operating system can be performed anytime within 30 days of the Windows 10 upgrade occurring.
As mentioned in other threads, the best tool to give you control over this and any future attempted to provide you Windows 10 when you don't want it is GWX Control Panel http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ (http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/). Install it and remove MS nagware and sneaky updaters, and set it to monitor for new ones.

I'm glad you mentioned this inability to control the updating process in 10. Thought I just hadn't found the right place to click.
-
We downloaded the free update but it refuses to install. Suits me. I was my wife's idea as she runs the son's business on a Windoze 10 machine and wanted the main one to do the same. I am happy with the 7 Professional on it.
-
Aaron, why don´t you use Internet Explorer on Win10 if you like it? It´s still there. Using Google Chrome instead...whew..

Fossil-I don't like Explorer at all. Security issues, clunky and somewhat overbearing , I've always found it clunky-Chrome and Firefox have been much better for me in all ways.
Im our office Explorer is retained only for legacy programs running for certain financial institutions. Big, big pain.
-
I don't find Win10 any more irritating than any of the other operating systems out there, including Mac and Linux.
All of them have their issues, usually related to third party drivers/software.

Thanks for the link. We're Win7 Pro here and it still installed on a couple of machines operating outside our domain. I have a licensed copy of Win7 Pro on my home machine also and just get the nag screens. I'll check out the GWX and see about using it here.

Not me, because I went Apple.
My old G4 MacBook 11 years old and going strong. It's fine for online forums, YouTube, and word processing. Getting slower on many sites and flash updates are no more. Hope to get a little more out of it before another Apple takes its place. Never a virus in all that time.
-
My wife's laptop was downloading all day yesterday but never finished. She still has Win 7. I just tried to turn it off and it has 22 updates.
My computer still has not been upgraded and when I punch the WIndow Icon it just disappears. Looks likes neither of us will actually get it.
-
I keep automatic updates turned off on all my systems (home and office). I have never seen the pop-up to upgrade that many people are talking about.
-
I moved my work XP over to Linux Mint-whew!
That's what I did too: converted my XP to Linux. It works, but the Linux bugs and quirks are painful. I still like it, but it's not painless.

The same applies to my old Dell Latitude D600 I keep for several reasons. It is from 2003 and runs great under Windows XP. Still gets updates for Flash, the Pale Moon browser (XP edition) and all the other tools.
My new laptop from the Latitude series however runs under Windows 10 from 29 July 2015 on. No problems. Main browser: Pale Moon 64 bit.
And could we please stop derailing the thread by telling experiences with total different OS´s?

The IT people at work asked that we not upgrade to 10. I think when I go in today I will anyway.
I have upgraded all four home PCs and it has worked well. I did have some issues finding a video driver for one antique laptop, but once I got that, it worked well.
-
We are required to use only Windows 7 and nothing over IE8 because of compatibility issues with our network.

We are required to use only Windows 7 and nothing over IE8 because of compatibility issues with our network.
Your IT team better get on the ball, then. While Win7 remains supported for the foreseeable future, IE8 is already off support - and has vulnerabilities that leave serious gaps. This will only get worse as time goes by...

I'm curious about what bugs and quirks you're experiencing with Mint. Over the years, Fedora has become very stable and non-buggy for me.

I recall that setting different user accounts required the use of lower case letters only. If you tried to use an upper case letter, Linux didn't tell you want the problem was, it would merely fail. Took me forever to even learn what the issue was.
Just stuff like that. I like it, but it's liking an old hunting dog. You take the good with the bad.

Interesting. I just added the user "Test" to my Fedora 23 system and it worked fine. (Not to show off, but just to see if there was a problem.)

Glad they fixed it.

I nixed the automatic updates after several messages to get a free upgrade to Win10. Windows 10 automatically spies on your computer and sends the data back to Microsoft. I don't like that spying. I have a home desktop currently running on Win7. If they try to automatically upgrade to Win10, I will go to Linux and use Thunderbird for email. No more spying.
I use CCleaner regularly to clean the machine. Works just fine. I also use Ghostery to prevent spyware from watching me. That is a great free app. You wouldn't believe how many companies want to take your data without your permission.

Which flavor? I'm using Mint-I'll be connecting to the network tomorrow but so far much nicer than the way XP was running-that said the Win10 at home has been fine.
-
Glad they fixed it.
Well, there are enough differences between those distributions that it doesn't prove anything was fixed in Mint. I was interested because I had never heard of the problem before.
-
A TV station where I hang out some times had one of their machines do the automatic bit so they decided to update them all. Once updated they lost their network server, it seems to be a known problem in 10 killing some network servers. They had to go back on all of their machines. Altogether tied the station up all day.

W10 that is upgraded from W7 has forced updates. If you install W10 fresh, you can still choose. I have a fresh W10 on my new Skylake box. Seems fine once you get past a few cosmetic changes. And if you do a fresh install, don't be connected to the Internet. If so, it will want to tie your computer to some Microsoft network account. If not, you still get to make local accounts. Once installed, then hook to Internet to get any updates.
Besides the GWX control panel, Microsoft also have an approved method to turn it off (involves getting an update to Windows Update itself and then messing around in the Group Policy Editor). This was mainly done for corporations wanting to turn off the W10 update nagging across the company.
I did notice that the W10 upgrade went from the "optional" category to the "important" category a month ago or so. I have GWX on my W7 box so I don't care.
-
AFAIK LINUX and its flavors have always been upper/lower case sensitive at all levels of syntax. So GREP and grep are different concepts in LINUX.
True, but as I understand the problem described by sign216, his Linux Mint system would fail to create a user account if any capital letters were used in the account name.
Edit: apparently some Linux systems default to not allowing capital letters in user names, since it's considered bad form in UNIX-like systems. The default behavior can be changed with some magical incantations. So it's not a bug, it's a conscious decision by the packager.
-
misc data points:
MS does not force an upgrade to windows 10. It offers and nags but it doesn't sneak it in on you.
W10 is a 64-bit operating system. If your computer doesn't do 64 bits throughout, the upgrade will fail. If the upgrade fails, don't try to force it. YOU will come to grief and you will blame it on Microsoft.
W10 does automatically do updates. Updates are not the same as upgrades, and this topic is so confused between the two concepts that I am not going to comment on the original post.
You have some control over the scheduling/restarts, but for at least while the opsys is being offered for free, one of the terms is that your computer SHALL accept updates. As has been pointed out, almost everything, including W10 updates, can be defeated. Clever people can make the updates not happen.
Last week (or over the weekend) a MS update came down that was not successful loading on many computers. Mine was one. However, the update process noticed that the update package was broken and uninstalled it for me automagically.
AFAIK LINUX and its flavors have always been upper/lower case sensitive at all levels of syntax. So GREP and grep are different concepts in LINUX.
That is all.
Some of these points are not entirely correct or don't contain full information and may cause confusion.
The latest Windows Update (for March) included a patch that for some systems assumes you have decided to upgrade to Win10 - it was labelled as 'important', so for many systems it was an automatic update. (Previous patches like this were mostly listed as optional and did not automatically install.) It will download the update in background without notification, and will begin the upgrade process. The process can be interrupted or reversed, however.
W10 is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The one you get will be based on what you install, unless the upgrade process tests for whether the components on your system can support 64-bit, which the installation 'prefers'. One of my testbed systems is a 64-bit CPU, but had 32-bit Win8.1 - when I upgraded it to Win10, I got 32-bit Win10.
In Win7 and Win8, all versions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Ultimate) allowed the user to select three basic modes of controlling updates (i.e., patches). Users could allow them, ask to be notified but not have patches download or install automatically, or simply set the entire process to manual. With some tinkering, you could get finer steps on the scale.
In Win10, Home gives you no choice about whether you receive updates and even some upgrades; you have limited control over when you will install them and when you will reboot in order to activate them (if required). Pro gives you a bit more control allowing a delay of receiving and installing patches, but it is just that - a delay, not the ability to say 'no'. Enterprise gives full control, but is designed to only work in an environment that uses Microsoft's enterprise management tools.

But the question is about MS issues ;)
FWIW, when I upgraded my machines (Win7Pro and Win7Home) I was allowed to NOT make a Microsoft account.
When I bought my new computer, same thing. I still do not have an account.
But, I do let the system upgrade automatically.
-
I learned the lesson. I'm saying as far away from Win10 as possible! :undecided:

Whether you call it a bug, or a conscious design choice, the net effect is the same: it's a Linux quirk that causes a huge pain for a new user. I.e. I'm talking about not allowing capital letters when choosing user acount names.
I love having a system that's an alternative to the corporate giants (Apple, Microsoft, etc), but the Linux quirks have their own price to pay. Nothing's free, right?
-
I *wanted" the W10 upgrade and I'm very happy with it. I think it's a bit improvement over 8/8.1 and I wanted to get it while it was free.
But then again, I also have fuel injection and I like the V9 !

MS would have had to work very hard to make it any worse than W8/8.1 on a non touch screen machine IMO

You make a good point, but Windows has at least an equal number of quirks. They're been around for so long that they've been forgotten. One example is having to select "Start" to stop the system. Admittedly I don't know if the latest versions are still that way, but it was true last time I used Windows.
And Apple... I once spent half an hour trying to figure out how to select the printer I wanted to use. I assumed it would be somewhere in a group of printer options labeled "print" or something similar, but no, I had to select "Chooser".

Funny, I completely about that, that you had to press Start to get to the stop function on PC computers.
-
Windows isn't the only OS that you use Start to get to "Shut Down" the computer, Linux (Ubuntu) does it that way also. And whoever said Win10 is a vast improvement over 8/8.1 is 100% correct.
-
But, in Win10 you now select "Power" on the menu to turn it off or restart. :) And they have that cute little icon for 'Power" as well.
Since I use a laptop most of the time I just set it up so it turns off when I close the lid. The new one is even better. The solid state drive means a boot up is right around 5sec.

I've never used Ubuntu, but I get the feeling it was set up to make Windows users feel comfortable. (No barb intended)
-
I tried the Win10 upgrade and liked it very much but it broke the card reader and some of the USB's on my Alienware M17 laptop so I reverted to Win7 pro and am sitting there. If Win7 Pro ever fails me I will install one of the Linuxes.

All text typed on the keyboard is stored in temporary files, and sent (once per 30 mins) to:
oca.telemetry.micro soft.com.nsatc.net
pre.footprintpredic t.com
reports.wes.df.tele metry.microsoft.com
This will allow Microsoft and the greater Parasite community to have a way to steal every joke, every poem, every intellectual endeavor you ever create and have it copyrighted before you even stop typing.
Telemetry is sent once per 5 minutes, to:
vortex.data.microso ft.com
vortex-win.data.microsoft.com

oca.telemetry.micro soft.com
oca.telemetry.micro soft.com.nsatc.net
sqm.telemetry.micro soft.com
sqm.telemetry.micro soft.com.nsatc.net
This allows them to track you very accurately.
Typing the name of any popular movie into your local file search starts a telemetry process that indexes all media files on your computer and transmits them to:
df.telemetry.micros oft.com
reports.wes.df.tele metry.microsoft.com
cs1.wpc.v0cdn.net
vortex-sandbox.data.microsoft.com
pre.footprintpredic t.com
This allows them to index any "unauthorized" content, and build a dossier on you that can be used in conjunction with their tracking data to stuff almost anyone in jail when needed.
When a webcam is first enabled, ~35mb of data gets immediately transmitted to:
oca.telemetry.micro soft.com
oca.telemetry.micro soft.com.nsatc.net
vortex-sandbox.data.microsoft.com
i1.services.social. microsoft.com
i1.services.social. microsoft.com.nsatc .net
This allows them to get a good layout of your home and surroundings, and a good look at YOU PERSONALLY so they know exactly who to go get and how to stage the attack when something you typed pissed them off.
Everything that is said into an enabled microphone is immediately transmitted to:

Correct, stay away from windoz 10.

I had a window pop up every so often asking if I'd like to install windows 10... I replied 'no' about 15 times, then this morning I saw that my windows 10 upgrade was about to start! if this is the future, count me out!!!
just installed the GWX and seems to be working.
-
" after all, they didn't mention any of the NT family"
Huh? XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 are all dyed-in-the-wool members of the NT - family.
Regarding the sniffing-out paranoia: all my machine reports are crash reports. Likewise before my different NT4-, XP-, Vista - and 7 - machines. It is extremely simple to change all this options at Win10. Including Win10 mobile.

Yes, A couple of days ago. I was doing a Garmin update and went a way for a couple min. came back it was doing its Install and Update. We have three lap tops and windows 10 is installed on one of them by my choice. The other 2 are used for our Vinyl decal Cutter and it is not compatible with Win10. I was furious, Then my wife said it had happened to her earlier on her lap top. after I has done its install It askes you if you are the owner of this computer. if you click it is not Win10 is uninstalled.

Well, I guess this qualifies as a forced conversion to Win 10 - my boss wants to give me a new computer, and guess what it will be running.
So I'm cleaning up this one right now to say goodbye to Win 7. I'm going to miss it.
-
Many years ago, by and large we (and I) were excited about upgrading to the latest version of DOS. I kinda skipped that and went straight to Windows 3. We were very excited by Windows 95 and other than a few mis-queues (like Bob), we sucked up the new OS and the latest fastest processor like fresh milk.
But somewhere around XP, upgrades were more of a threat than something to look forward to. :undecided:
-
I'm with CoolRunnings on this one. Windows 10 is primarily a way for Microsoft and government agencies to spy on you through your computer. It is the best backdoor money can buy. It seems some on this board do not care if they are being spied on or not. I choose to not be so naive. And, I place a very high value on my privacy. Once Win 10 is on your computer you have NO way to stop the computer from sending your data, all your info they can grab, back to Microsoft. It won't tell you when those reports are being sent back. To me, that is a shining example of the sinister sickness we have to deal with every day. No thanks.

Apple is no better. Computer users only get to choose WHO rapes them. The fact that they are going to be raped is not negotiable. It's a huge reason I'm not going to try to save my business. Back in the 70s and 80s we were pushing the personal computer as a way to protect our privacy and information. Now the same companies that sold us on that concept are the ones that are 'centralizing' it again. You cannot buy a copy of MS OFFICE 2015. You can only buy time on the Microsoft server. It's exactly what was going on in the 70s when Microsoft promised to rescue us from all that, except that MS is now telling you up front that they're helping themselves to your identity, information, and privacy. It's in the license 'agreement'. You play by their wishes or you don't play at all. This is the point that I quit.

Not having any issues with my Commodore 64. Still runs as good as it did when I took it out of the box.

As aggregat data points we may be interesting, as individuals; unless we have a lot of discretionary cash, we are not.
So remain poor and healthy (at least old unhealthy farts can be a revenue stream for health care providers) and the powers that be will not be interested in you.

As long as you have the 2400 baud modem...sweet!!
Jeff
ps still have my c64 with the 1541 disk drive and modem (yes..2400!!) in the attic.
Hook it up every couple of years. Still run great. Just slow...like me!!!
Just can't seem to part with it.....

I still got a vic20 with tape input. When I stepped up to floppies I got a 1542 -- dual stacked! Then an Epson R80 COLOR dot matrix printer. Yeah! That's the stuff!
I still got my first laptop too -- a Tandy model 100, and a Compaq 8088 LUGGABLE! It's the size of a necchi-elna sewing machine and weighs more.
When I upgraded the Commodore Vic 20 I got the Commodore PC-10 (8086) with the massive 10Mb HDD! I had to sell my WPL Harley to afford it. That was in about '83.

I am one of those who doesn't care about the privacy. My life has been open to the govt for over 40 years.
I am also one of those who recognizes that the only way to maintain privacy is to be disconnected. No cable TV, no internet, no cell phone, no credit cards, no govt checks. Cash for everything and only in person transactions. Even a hard wire phone isn't 'safe' anymore. Once you connect to one of those systems, your data is subject to monitoring.
Like stated above, the govt and big business really isn't interested in 99.999% of the people as individuals.

It happened to me a couple of months ago. I always liked NT, then "7" was ok. After that they forced "8" on me. What a cluster@#$%. Ten sucks, very intrusive but it seems better than "8".
-
My computer came with 8.1 on it. Total garbage. When 10 was offered via a free download, I jumped on it. It would not work. I took it to my PC shop and Jon installed Win 10 from a CD. Works great now. Much better than 8. I like the way it handles memory.

Dusty
Hmmm do I want the blue pill or the red pill?
-

Just an observation from an old counterculture type .
No idea how any of this works , the privacy thing is certainly a big issue . However , we see everyday how most folks aren't thinking about privacy when they tweet , or use any other form of social media to inform the world of their doings . Hell , it isn't the gov't , or any company that is doing the real damage , it is the public talking about affairs , misdeeds , and other unsavory activities right out in the open . Kill your GF , post a picture of the deed on FB , cheat on your spouse , well hell , brag about it on twitter , do stupid stuff on a bike or in a car , shoot , let's go pro it and Vlog it . Nope , it isn't a conspiracy , it is peoples vanity or lack of any common sense doing the real harm . Or maybe it is all a conspiracy ... of dunces

Yup, it's a sad comment on the human condition that the first thing we do with a new concept is find the most stupid, useless application of it and ride that pony till it drops . ..
-
The pony appears to have dropped, been kicked upright - several times.
