Title: It's not if but when......
Post by: AMGeneral on March 14, 2016, 03:42:16 PM
Always been told, it's not if you lay a bike down but when. My when happened yesterday. First ride of the year too.

Saturday I installed new tires and tubes on the Jackal. Had issues with the beads seating but got them on and it was to late to go ride. Besides I was much too worn out from fighting the tire beads.

Sunday came and it was foggy, but ok to ride. I was still sore from saturday but ready to ride. I have ridden further in worse conditions so I thought I would go and check out the monthly fun launch at the rocket pasture.

Took my usual route, k14 to Harper, us160, went east to Argonia then south to k33, then east one mile and back north. Roads were fine all the way there. My only concern was the one mile gravel road north and the 1/2 mile gravel road east to the pasture.

Made the left onto the northbound gravel road and it was nice and hard packed. Much nicer than usual. Then I made the right turn onto the last half mile. Thats when the cuss words started. I made it about 1/4 mile and the gravel turned to slime. Sticky slime. But I was still rolling so I kept at it. Made it another 1/4 mile and front end washed out and I did a flopper on the right side.

Was going slow enough that I didn't get injured, got a couple cosmetic things to fix on Jackal and once fixed won't know they were bent. Rod from brake pedal bent from the floor board folding up, and I popped one of the windshield grommets out. Easily fixed. Had to wash out a ton of crap from the fenders at the well at the pasture.

After I spent time at the pasture, watched a couple launches, clouds were much to low for big rockets, they closed down the range and everyone started to leave. By then the road had dried out and been packed down enough I could get out.

Ran into the best bike wash rain cloud. Lasted about a mile and did a pretty darn good job of washing the rest of the mud off the Jackal.

So it's not if, it's when.

See ya at Cedarvale!

A low speed tipover in gravel doesn't even count... as far as I'm concerned, your record is clean.

:1:  Right, slime doesn't count.  Your record is spotless (if not your bike).

One mile from my house on a wet dirt/sand road the Norge started a weave dance, thought for sure I was going down but goosed it a bit and did the foot kick out and she righted herself. Got lucky.

Awwww just limp it off! Probably be back to normal in a month or so.

Although I have had major road rash in my day none of it has been on Rusty. But my tip overs and slides I have done on Rusty always stretch every muscle in my body. ankles .shoulders. neck. So I know from those tip overs what ya feel like Rod
Yep  a month or so your still not old so maybe you will heal quicker than me!!
Glad ya didn't break a bone or something.

Glad you're okay, and that the bike is not too much worse for wear.
Last week I came very close to washing out on that slick cinder stuff they throw on the roads in lieu of salt. Made a 20mph right-hand turn onto another road, hit the gravel and felt my front end wander a bit before thankfully biting onto clean pavement again. That stuff is awful.

Ride safe  :bike-037:

It's not if but when......

Hell, for some of us it's not even when but how often and how badly.

"Fingers, fingers, toes, toes, ankle, ankle, wrist, wrist.... knees and elbows?....."

Falling off bikes, outa planes and helicopters, from boats, trees, roofs and ladders... I've been a constant victim of abuse by both gravity and momentum.

I'm a frikken one man Newton lab and not the happy fig kind either!

I'll not even get into other, general, one man kinetic experiments in flexibility and trauma abatement.
