Title: Independent Repair/Maintenance Shops
Post by: swordds on March 19, 2016, 09:19:43 PM
One of the major concerns with MGs is their lack of dealerships for service. Many owners like (or at least are not opposed to) doing their own service. I am curious if any are using independent or non-MG dealers (e.g. BMW, Triumph, Honda) dealers for service?  For example, I bring my car to a Goodyear service center (one I have dealt with for decades and really like) because it is more convenient and cheaper than the dealer. Is there anything similar to a Goodyear franchise type service center for motorcycles?  Do you think (or know) if a typical BMW dealer would service a MG even if they didn't sell them?  Also, I know that for cars using non-dealer maintenance services does not void a warranty, is the same true for MGs?

As hard as it is to find an actual Guzzi dealer that knows how to work on the bikes, I'd think it darn near impossible to find an independent dealer who would touch one.

That being said, my local BMW shop has been known to take a Guzzi in for minor work.  Tire changes, oil changes, etc.

For tire changes, I remove the wheels from my bikes and carry them in to a local Honda store for mounting new tires.  No way they'd take the whole bike in for a tire change and have to figure out how to remove the wheels.

As far as warranty, the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson%E2%80%93Moss_Warranty_Act) allows a vehicle's owner to do periodic maintenance, or a mechanic of the owner's choice, and maintain the vehicles warranty.

MPH is now an independent, but you'll still get the same service as when they were in the dealer network.

And well worth a long ride/drive to have work done !!!

However, I think our cajun friend is looking or something a little more local than 370 miles distant, in Houston...

Depends on your local independent....     Locally, we have non dealer places I'd have work on a Guzzi that was out of warranty.   But we are lucky that way, as far as motorcycle shops in our area.  Wide selection.
