Title: Non-speaking movies
Post by: Tom on March 20, 2016, 05:12:02 PM
Had the movie "Castaway" on while doing my posts on Wildguzzi.  During the long stretches of non-dialogue,  the thought of the only other movie that had almost no dialogue was Mel Brook's "Silent Movie".  IIRC, the only line spoken was from the mime Marcel Marceau.

Seems the rest of the movie was no microphone while "Castaway" with Tom Hanks is open mike with no dialogue.  Any other movies?

While there's dialogue, it's seldom, short and far between.

While there's narrative, it's spare and entirely relevant.

For non-speaking (nearly) movies, we absolutely adore "Never Cry Wolf".

That zero dialogue Redford project is a killer too. "All Is Lost"

Todd.

Wallace and Gromit The wrong trousers very little dialog dont think Gromit has a mouth? gets my vote.
later films have more dialogue and a motorbike but wrong trousers is still the best

The last one "Fury Road" was intended to have no dialogue at all, but producers beat down director George Miller.
Apparently there is a B+W version of fury road with no dialogue, just music, that a fan made.  I've heard it's as good if not better than the theatrical release

Lake Tahoe,

Worth a mention because the lake it's self looks like the kind of end of the world place I'd set for a destination for a long cross country bike ride. Exactly what I'd do once I got to lake Tahoe out of season I don't know? Stand there in silence for a hour or two - Observe it's great blueness. Well this is lake Tahoe, turn round and ride home. Kind of like when the Penguins of Madegascar reach Antarctica.

The Wrong Trousers  is definitely a good one but not without dialogue , a lot of unspoken dialogue , facial expressions, body language etc it really is quite good. And like pikipiki says it's the best of the bunch by Nick Parks

The Artist was very charming, and then two days later you forgot all about it.

Let's see... movies with very little dialog are...
The Good The Bad and the Ugly.
Solaris (the boring Russian one, not the boring George Clooney one).
Drive, with Ryan Gosling.
Overrated Austrian horror movie Goodnight Mommy (Ich seh, Ich seh in German).

Jerry Lewis movie, The Bellboy.  Not without dialogue but Lewis doesn't speak for the first 30 minutes of the film.

Gigot, a hard to find Jackie Gleason movie in which he plays a mute, the other characters speak.  Incredible performance by Gleason.

Re: "Never Cry Wolf"--the build-up to the line "He said, 'Good idea'." still kills me!  I love the subtlety that minimal dialogue allows to expand.  Whoever wrote "I didn't have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one" absolutely hit it out of the park...

Quest for fire, yeah!  Cute little spinner Rae Dawn Chong running around nekkid while a bunch of crow magnons fight with cannibals and learn to have sex face to face while stumbling onto a way to cause fire instead of freezing while waiting for a lightening strike to ignite something.   Good movie
