Title: 1997 California Tank Vent Question

Hey, new guy here with a question, probably a dumb one...

I have a 97 California 1100 that I am restoring after previous owner rode it off the road, and I have the tank off to do some body work. My tank has the nipple coming off the top just in front of the fuel cap, that goes into the CARB evap system, I think. I have seen pictures online of a bunch of bikes that don't have that. Is that something I can just cut off and weld up to seal, and remove that system from the bike altogether? Or is there a reason that would be a bad idea?

I just like the cleaner look of it not being there, but if it has to stay, so be it.

If you do that you need to be sure that you have a vented gas cap.  Look in the end of that tube and you should find a brass carburetor jet.

What did you end up doing? I have a 97 California and have head you can remove almost all of the anti pollution stuff.

You can remove the seat, brakes and lights, too.  But why would you?

I slipped a long black vacuum port cap over mine and tell the curious its an angle of lean indicator - or the bike's 'angry inch'.  Seriously, I also considered cutting it off to be job one when I got the bike.  Glad I didn't.  It's a goofy guzzi feature and you'll ignore it after a while. (Other features maybe not so much.)

'97 was the last year of that tank top vent tube on the Californias.  It was moved to under the tank in '98.

You'll need a vent, so you can't just weld it up and forget it.  You could source a '98-up tank that has all the work done.

Or, you could be old school cool and leave the tank top vent.  If you look at pix of Ducatis from the era, they also have it.
