Cleaning out the garage. Some of you may remember this automatic chain oiling system. Pretty sure it has all the parts and instructions. It's yours for the cost of shipping.

Chain drive from 1921 through 1976. Scott oiler would do fine. Not really necessary since the crankcase had a lateral passage to deliver some engine oil mist directly onto the chain.

I rely on Maxima chain wax on my MuZ 660 single. If Scott oilers weren't so pricy I might have tried 1.

I had one on my V-Strom 1000 - worked fairly well, was particularly useful on Ironbutt rides, especially after going through some rain. I averaged about 20-22,000 miles per chain...

I've had a Scottoiler on my 2003 Suzuki SV-1000 sport bike since I bought it new in July, 2003. First and best upgrade I fitted. Chains become a much more viable proposition with a Scottoiler fitted.

There's a guy here who says o-ring chains don't need lubing and he doesn't on his chain drive bikes. I'm waiting for him to chime in here. :smiley:

I don't use chain lubes. All of them collect grit. I don't know of way to get grit off the bizzilion tiny crevices on a chain. Even if you remove the chain and soak it (in what?), by the time you finish all that fussing there will still be grit chewing on the O or X rings. Some have said, and I haven't heard back up, that some chain lubes actually deteriorate the O/X ring material. Or might it be the propellant? I only use WD40. The best part may be that WD40 doesn't fling off and make the ugliest mess in motorcycling and it doesn't hold grit. I've had very good service from chains over many years averaging around 20K or better on 650 to 1000 L bikes and on a variety of 2 strokes. I did throw a chain once. A 125cc 2 stroke race bike. Unknown and not in the service manual it had a clip type master link. The reason being that weeny engines should not be fighting the friction of O/X rings. IOW: wash, dry then soak the chain in 80W overnight, betwixt races. R3~

My concerns of lubing a chain drive is not only for the chain but also the teeth on the sprockets. Do some here reject concerns about sprocket wear? If I had my way all chain drives would be enclosed in oil so there would be no concerns like they used to do back in the 50's. I have a 50cc scooter set up that way.

BTW, with the Scottoiler my chains last for 25K miles and my countershaft sprocket looks as good as new at 43K miles. I do clean inside the countershaft sprocket cover once a year. The Scottoiler uses a very light oil (I use synthetic ATF as a quart lasts me over 3000 miles) and this is very easy to wipe off with the stack of paper napkins I have accumulated from restaurant lunches with Karen.
