OK, as a good dad???..., my youngest daughter Lisa has been sitting the last 5 years on back of my Quota, trailing all over the country. 26 states to be exact. Many of you have seen her with me at the rallies. Lisa is taking her riders education class this Saturday and Sunday and if she passes, there will be a KTM 390 Duke waiting in the garage....

Ellen, the older sister (a sophomore art student at Temple University (Tyler School of Art) is heading to Rome (Italy) in August for a full year to study art. What's better than that??? I wish I could go too;-)
She asked if she could have a Vespa in Rome and I'm OK with it. What's a better way of moving around and seeing Tuscany, Rome and surrounding area than with a Vespa.
However she does not (yet) have a motorcycle license, just a regular car drivers license.
Does anyone know if she needs a motorcycle license to buy and ride a Vespa?? She is a dual citizen (EU-Finland and US), so that part is no problem...
My only real problem is worrying about the Italian guys, with her blond hair....

Have her get it at home. She'll be able to use it in Italy as she's only a student and not a permanent resident. That is unless they have changed the rules specifically time limits on temporary status in the country. They have a helmet law. They also have a lot of speed enforcement camera.

You might start out by obtaining a "CODICE FISCALE" (KOH-di-chee fiss-KAHL-ay). Easy application from your local Italian Consulate or Embassy. Only takes a month or so to obtain. Free or very cheap as I recall. Does not require an Italian residential address. Sort of the equivalent of a US Social Security Number. It is a common document for any legal procedure such as buying insurance, property, etc. Just documents who you are and where to find you. I got one so that my Italian friends can easily add me to their car and moto insurance when I go to visit. First thing the insurance agents ask for. Any traveling businessperson would get one to expedite business work in Italy.

I've been driving on my American license for 7 months now, haven't been stopped but I wouldn't worry about it much. :thumb: I do long term lease on a car through Renault and it has French tags, police don't even give it a second look although people look at it like "what the hell is that?"
Took me about 20 minutes to get a Codice Fiscale in Castel di Sangro, no big deal but if you make major purchases or services you'll be asked for it.
Anyway, bottom line, when in Rome...yada, yada, don't worry about a license if her US is valid, the process of obtaining an Italian license would take more than a year :grin:

In Italy the law requires to have a " class A" driver license to drive motorcycles. ( the equivalent of the class M in the USA )
class B to drive cars.
It is not possible to drive a motorcycle with a driver license for a car, i am 100% sure about this.
Obtain the motorcycle driver license in italy is not difficult but it is quicker in the USA , i would suggest your daughter to get the M driver License at home.
Would she be able to drive a motorcycle with a USA driver license ?
As a tourist yes, she could rent a car or a motorcycle however , i am not sure she would be able to buy and register the vespa and get insurance , but again i am not 100% sure, i would contact the Embassy in Rome and inquire.

This certainly sounds like an opportunity of a lifetime that should not be missed. Not to worry you but, my daughter did a SOCHI art program one semester in Florence in '07.We visited her for 10 days before she came home and hit many day trips, soooo many museums, etc. that she had planned for us. To have her give us the history and backgroud of all the artists and each particular painting was priceless.
He hit Florence, Venice, Sienna, Cinque Terre, Naples, Amalfi coast (got to drive a new Alfa 166!! along the coast, holy shite is it narrow), Capri, and Rome. Can't wait to go back.
My daughter was also a gorgeous blonde (still is), and stood out because of it. Just make sure she is careful. It is a different culture there and she should not have any misconceptions about that. They are more forward and brash than she is used to here, believe me. I do think she will have a great time.

With the "B" you can drive up to 125cc and 11KW motorcycles/scooters.
That are the best (for dimensions/weight) to move into the city anyway.

Whenever I've spent considerable time abroad - I've always gone to AAA and picked up an "International Driving Permit".
While its validity may be argued, it has (every time to date) passed with enough credibility for me to be on my merry after being stopped and when presented with passport and regular U.S. license. It has also smoothed over, the process of renting or "hiring" vehicles.
From Southwest Asia to Ireland, motorcycle, car, truck and trailer it's got me on down the road.
