Title: Batwing for V7 Stone?
Post by: robdrobd on April 19, 2016, 06:06:09 PM
I know the windshield question has come up a lot, but has anyone found a batwing fairing that will fit the v7 stone/classic series? I called Memphis Shades today and they said they can't do it.

It would be an awful lot of drag.

I'll admit, this weekend I was kinda wishing for a windshield, but it's rare I do 600 miles on a weekend with my V7 and, if I'd just worn a FF helmet I would have been fine.

Have you looked at the OEM touring windshield?

That drag coefficient thing is tricky , dependent on a bunch of high powered mathematology and a bit of  voodoo . You are probably correct that a batwing fairing isn't very slick through the air , of course no streetbike or even racebikes have good aero . Would be interesting to see some figures on batwings , the Aerofoil on the Jackal probably isn't slick , but it isn't coming off

National Cycle Plexifairing would be an easy route to the same end.d

Does anyone have the OEM touring shield? Does it offer protection without compromising a straight up posture?

I've not purchased from this vendor, but they offer a universal Batwing fairing for sale...

I've owned a lot of bikes with full fairings or windscreens; most do a half-ass job of getting clean air with little to no buffeting to the rider.  I presently have a BMW R1200RT with a California Scientific windshield that is the best that I've ever owned BUT I installed an inexpensive cafe fairing on my V7 Classic that totally impressed me.  The little cafe fairing keeps the air pressure off of my chest and what comes over the top and around the side of the little faring is very clean air with zero buffeting.  In 1976, I bought my first BMW (a new R90S) and I had forgotten just how much clean air comes off & around these little fairings.  Now, I don't do any freeway riding with the V7; strictly two lane country & mountain roads...........and for that purpose, the cafe fairing is hard to beat.  If you're going to do much in the way of freeway riding, look at the National Cycle Plexifairing that rocker posted the link to; I installed one on a BMW R100 airhead and it worked pretty good once I got the angle and height set up correctly.  I DID have to add a Laminar Lip that I customized with a heat gun to bend it where I needed it but the entire setup worked well.

Now that is sweet! How was the attachment? Straightforward or tons of fab work?

It's not attached , that would be one of the other Daves holding it up this last weekend .

Almost every time I want to contemplate wind resistance or aerodynamic efficiency in my own brain-ball, I like to note or even try what it would be like trying to hold the item against a strong wind or in the back of a pickup.

I know you science wonks will toss in that the truck's own body will affect the effect but relative is relative and it has still told me what condition my condition was in. Yeah, I did that.

Thinking that way - seems a batwing would be pretty taxing on a little V7.
