Title: tank bag on matte paint, V7II Stone
Post by: stevet on April 26, 2016, 11:09:45 PM
Back last summer I thought I'd read about someone having issues with the matte paint on the V7II Stone tank not liking tank bags, maybe magnetic bags?  As though the magnet contact was leaving some sort of imprint on the paint.

Or am I just dreaming.

What are ya'll using for tank bags on this bike?

Steve.

I can't say about the matte paint job V7's, but for what it's worth, the beautiful gloss clear coat on my V7C took a beating a couple weeks ago. About 300 miles into a trip, tank bag in use, I noticed a a bunch of circle-shaped scratches, buffed into the clear coat, at the magnetic attachment parts of the tank bag. I restored it to *mostly* new shape with some Nu Finish. I will no longer use the tank bag as it is, but will try to find a thin, soft cloth to put in between it and the tank. They're great for a place to stow your tools, gloves, and other random stuff. But throw a soft layer in between to protect your paint  :thumb:

Can't say specifically about the V7, but I can say that matte paint doesn't like anything touching it except air, wet cloths, and water. It can be very pretty and it never needs wax - but it's actually a lot touchier than anyone will tell you.

A bit of IRC Racers Tape (sometimes called Hurricane or helicopter tape) is just the ticket.  Not really tape but a flexible poly, it leaves no marks and adds a cushion under tank bag magnets, provides an abrasion buffer for straps, and all kinds of other great things.  Been using it for years on bikes, autos, and at work.  $$$$ and worth every penny.

2" by 12 foot rolls is what we buy.  www.findtape.com.

You'll love it, and you're welcome.

This is the stuff.  I should also mention that it works a treat on lower fork legs when off on a road trip.  Keeps the road grit from hammering the finish.  Nice over headlights too as it provides stone chip protection while doing next to zero for light output.

Hepco & Becker make a tank bag and the associated fuel ring mount.
The tank Bag does not touch the surface of the tank.
The attachment is via a replacement tank ring with magnets.
The only problem I have found is that there is not a lot of room to release the bag, otherwise good.
Oh another problem is that the tank bag top has an clear plastic insert for a map and the plastic is shiny. With the sun in the right position, the reflection is very annoying.
If anyone could come up with a way of reducing the reflection, I would be grateful.

Cheers

Another option is the clear plastic cling-type protectors sold by outfits like Aerostich:

If you like having shiny paint but ride hard, try this. The optically clear 7.5 mil thick polished vinyl works as a removable skin to protect your bike’s painted finish. Goes on easily and cuts-to-fit wherever needed (under tank bags, etc...). Reusable over and over. Applies with only water and a squeegee. Flexible and durable wear and scratch protection. Includes instructions. Three 11"×14" sheets.

I added paint protector plastic film to the high points of  the glossy areas of my V7.  Does a great job, cheap, but a pain to apply.

Can I assume that means the product can be removed/repositioned without paint damage?

Correct.

Come on, Jerry.  You know how I am.  Research and test EVERYTHING.  It works. Period.  There's always more ways to skin the cat but this one is A-OK.

I had it on my Tiger tank every year at Bennington and under the Stone tank for the ride home after the pick-up at Jim's.

Jim,

Thank you for the conformation.  I emailed the manufacture days ago with some questions and never received an answer.

Somehow I missed seeing you put the tape on  both your Norge and the V7 at Jim's shop...probably too busy BS'ing with staff and customers and drinking coffee and eating cookies.

We will all miss you at the open house next friday and sat.

Paint was soft on my V11 LeMans.  I used the rubber shelf liner under tank bags and straps on that bike.

I've seen material like that leave impressions in soft paint.

Thanks for the ideas.

After considering the choices, I might investigate the gas cap ring options, keep the bag up and off the paint entirely.  Also, getting away from magnets entirely seems like a good idea.  I never put things that can be adversely affected by magnets into a magnetic bag such as credit cards, camera memory chips, etc.

I use a magnetic bag on my FJR for day trips, mainly for maps, water bottle, etc., and as long as I've cleaned the tank and the bottom of the bag before mounting it, I have not had any issues with paint damage.  Visible, anyway.  But it's a light off-silver color and it's almost impossible to see anything on that color, unless it's really filthy.

Just to be clear: I was made aware of this product after reading about it in MotorCycle Consumer News.  They were very high on it and the many uses it provided.  The tape is also called helicopter tape as the military uses it to protect the leading rotor edges.  It's also called NASCAR tape as it's used on bodywork often.

Tank bag rings work well-I have several.

You may also find the IEC Surface Guard product to be used around key ignitions to prevent marking at the steering head, body and frame locations to protect from straps, saddle bag tops and/or corners to prevent heel marks from mounting and dismounting, lower case areas to prevent heel marks (heat does not affect it in that location), and dozens more places on the bike and off.
