Title: Roper Plate Group Buy for V11 Sports/LeMans
Post by: Scud on May 02, 2016, 08:18:54 PM
I'm trying to get enough commitment so Pete Roper will do up a batch of his signature plates for the V11 engines. I'm collecting commitments on the V11LeMans.com site on this thread:

http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19423

In case you don't know what this is about, the plate prevents sloshing of oil that can cause your oil pump to slurp up some air (which is bad). There's more to it than that, but that's the big picture.

Essentially, I'm willing to coordinate getting several plates into the US and distributing them, along with the needed gaskets. And I'm just passing along costs. Details at thread above. While I don't know the exact price, I know Pete will give us a fair price if we can get enough people to justify making a batch.

Got a V11 Sport or variant? Think about putting in one of these plates. Some have described it as the single most important thing you can add to your bike to protect it.

The Roper "sloppage plate" saved my wheelie prone 02 Lemans many times as well as Chuck from Indiana's impossible not to wheelie Scura. Best value for the money in Guzzidom

Pete has come up with some excellent ideas over the years. I have employed a few of them on my bikes. Not only are you doing something very, very good for your bike, you're doing something to support a guy that has helped Guzzidom above and beyond!

For those that don't have this in their spine frame, you should seriously consider getting this.

Just a suggestion, depending on the international shipping rate, it might be easier/cheaper to get an officially sanctioned (with royalties paid, of course!) engineering drawing of the plate from Pete and get a stateside machine shop to run a batch.  From past experience, I can tell you that up to two of these plates will fit into a USPS flat rate envelope for shipment anywhere in the US for about $15.

Thanks for all the comments. We're up to 10 plates so far.

Thanks MGrego for replying at V11LeMans.com.  It helps me keep organized.

Just adding a bit of utility here and no offense to Mr Roper:

He has mentioned that an outfit in Britain sells a knock-off/rip-off (no royalties to Pete).  I hate to patronize crooks up to point of burning big bearings.

I suppose this is life's moral dilemmas.    :boxing:

Pete or someone else has/had a template listed on the web that I used several years ago to make my own. Found a suitable sized sheet of aluminum and cut it with a metal blade in my saber saw. Not very difficult to do for those who like to do. Those that don't please patronize Mr. Roper, we owe him.

However you do this, do it. I found when demonstrating proper braking technique coaching an MSF BRC-2 class the engine experienced oil starvation during very hard braking. The oil sloshed forward leaving the oil pickup dry.

Earl - since you have a V11 Blobbio (isnt't fun to make up variants of that name?) you should also join V11LeMans.com.

Here's a thread on the "Challenge Question" so you can get yourself regis-turd.

http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17364

I put you name on the list - will update if you choose a different user name for that forum. I think you'll see that several people (self-included) have the same name on both sites.

Funny - I just posted about that at the same time as you.  See above.

Yup, we must have posted at virtually the same time.  When I click the link, I get "  Sorry, we can't find that".   And. " you don't have permission to view this forum"
There is an email link to the community administrator.  So guess I could try that.

Try going directly to www.V11LeMans.com instead of the link to the thread that I posted above. Or maybe there's a register button or something... I forget - because I only had to do it once.  Or bug the administrator, Jaap, he's in Netherlands.

I put your name on the list too.

According the challenge question thread, the answer to the challenge question is "V11" - perhaps if somebody successfully registers, they can confirm that here.

Are they compatible with a '95 Spot? All that interchange stuff eludes me.

Todd.

The '97-up spine frame bikes have the "broad sump".

The '92 to '96 bikes have the "standard sump".

No, the V11 Sport/LeMans sloppage sheet will not fit a Carb Sport.

However, if you PM Pete, he may be able to fix you up with a sloppage sheet for the standard sump.

I have one on my '96 model Sport 1100.

Good to know... I like standard sump as opposed to "narrow". Feels more, well, empowering. Pete fell away for a bit - is he back in the game here?

Don't give up. You have a V11 Ballabio - so you will find TONS of model-specific experience there. The answer to the challenge question is just "V11"  - I remember struggling and ended up sending an e-mail to the administrator. I will send you his e-mail in a PM.

this one?  If so, I'll write the moderator and find out who's asleep over there.  Send me a PM with your info.

actually I find them a knowledgeable and respectful bunch.  I know a couple of them won't come over here because it's a little too rough and tumble over here.

The mod's a nice guy and I would guess it's an oversight.

OK, if I order thirty V11 plates I can do them for $120AU each.

If I order five or ten 'Tonti' type plates which will do early Sports/Daytonas and Bellagios too they will be $140 each.

Postage will be on top of that. I won't order until I recieve payment and won't ship until that is covered.

Just registered. Make sure you don't have any script blockers enabled. Enter security code in what looks like a small pic. In the field that says "what is this site about" type "Moto Guzzi".

See you on the "other side." It will be nice to have a few more members there.

Update on the plates: If Pete makes 30 V11 plates and 5 for the early Sport/Daytona models, then most are already spoken for. But the following are still available:

3 for V11, 2 of which Pete will ship to me in the US
2 for Sport/Daytona

Most people have already pre-paid, everything seems to be going smoothly.

I'm confused. I though the early sports (for instance the Kid's spot) didn't need them?

IMHO, you're right, Chuck. It was the 'broad sump' that brought out the need for the plate. Windage plates have been made for regular sump 'race bikes' that would tend to puke out the oil through the breather.

My Cali came with a pan spacer which was a different attempt to space the oil level below the crank. Newer models have a deeper pan.

Generally speaking they don't Chuck. I always try and make it clear that for most road use models with the *Old* style 'Tonti' sump are unlikely to suffer from pick-up exposure like the 'Broad Sump' engines and even the 'Broad Sump' five speeds seem to be less prone to it than the V11's but for folks who are going to spend a fair bit of time in the upper rev range there are benefits that come from reducing windage.

The reason I'm only producing a run of five of the 'Tonti' style plates is because I actively discourage fitting one unless the bike is being used for racing or is ridden very hard on the road. It's just another leak point after all. Conversely the V11 'Broad Sump' plate is a real engine saver.

I think that message is well-received. As evidence: we've got commitments (and almost all payments) for your current run of 30 V11 plates.

This thread needs some pictures.

Here's looking up at a plate during installation:
